Looking at Minn Kota Riptide, hear mixed reviews?

For 17ft boat ~2000-2500lbs, should I go with an 70-80lb thrust? or will 55lb do?

I'm about the same size and weight. I run a 70# and it's plenty.

I just finished boat shopping and out of the 3 dealers I went to, one pushed the 70 on his boats and the other two pushed the 80. Both the dealers that had the 80 said they can show me a pile of 70's in the back because they don't hold up. But the 80 is a big upgrade in internals.

Now the guy with the 70's on his boats said he has one on his boat and hasn't had a problem in three years so take it for what it's worth. But long story short he had the best deal on the boat so I had him upgrade my Riptide to the 80. That's on a 22ft Xpress.

I have an 80lb riptide on my 22 foot nautic star xts and it moves it good enough for me bit a bigger one would be better. Went smaller to save money on motor and no 3rd battery. However, I do wish I would have got the I pilot motor.

Go with the 80. I had it on a 17' boat that was about 1500lbs loaded and it was perfect.

Erring on the stronger side has its benefits because stronger motors run more efficiently at lower speeds and provide a safety cushion for handling wind, waves and current.

Anyone else run motor guides? Or is Minnkota Riptide the way to go?

We had an old Johnson trolling motor that was awesome.

We have a Rhodan 70 on our aluminum boat. It's alright. I have a hatred for remote controlled trolling motors but this one seems to work well. The GPS anchor is pretty cool too.

I have I pilot on both of my boats. After using one I couldn't go back to the old type again.
