This is the setup I built for mrs bootlegger. The back panel facing the yard is a hinged door, so she can just walk up and fetch the eggs without having to go inside the pen. I've kinda taken it over for my turkeys, who've started laying recently. Cranking up the incubator today

Get a coon trap. I started with 9 hens and a rooster. I know have seven hens. A coon got into my coop and killed 2.

When I started setting the coon trap I caught a coon a night for a solid month.

My morning routine became take the kids to school, come home get the trap and the 22, drive out to bayou Paul, let the coon out of the cage, shoot it, return home, drop of the gun, go to the office.

Had a RIR rooster that got very aggressive. He spurred the back of my leg one day. I would be on guard after that, and when he would rush me, I'd kick the shite out of him. He got pretty good at sparring with me, and I had to up my game to get him.

I never go in my coop without my "bitch be good" stick. When the rooster comes at me, I give him a whack and say bitch be good.

The house rule is if a rooster spurs me once is in a gumbo that evening.

Chickens can learn, when I was about 13 we had chickens and one big white rooster hated me and always tried to spur me when I went in to gather eggs. One day I went in with a fairly good size limb and he came after me but made a mistake, he hung up in the air just like a hanging curve ball and I connected with a home run swing. After he bounced off the fence a few yards away he got up and looked at me. At that point I had explained things good and proper to him and he never caused me a problem again.

Check Craigslist. You can find someone there selling just about all stages. I think they have a swap at the Tractor Supply in Bogalusa Saturday. I'm sure you can buy outright.

Yeah we have been buying ours as "pullets" which are around 2 months old, cost is a little higher but we are guaranteed females. Last thing I want to do is buy chicks and end up with 6 roosters lol

We've got deposits on a Crested Cream Legbar, Lavender Orpington, Speckled Sussex, and a Snow Ameraucana that we should be getting within the next month once they are old enough to sex.

Some updates to the inside of the coop this weekend. Added "poop boards" below the roost for easier clean up and a few other things.
