The hens and rooster don't have to be the same breed. We had some really pretty Americana roosters when I was a kid. The hens lay pretty well too and the green & blue eggs are pretty cool to mix in with the brown ones.

Rooster breed doesn't matter, mine are Rhode Island Red's - lots of people mix. We thought we would be able to handle a rooster when he finally starting looking more roosterish - when he started crowing, he had to go to a new home. If you get chicks you won't need a coop for a while, you will need to make them a brooder until they are about 8wks old. Than you can move them to a coop. They usually start laying around 23-25wks depending on breed. My run door off the coop stays open 24/7 - in the morning they come out and start tearing up the yard, and go back in during the day to lay eggs, just before dark they head for the coop and roost for the evening.

Oh, and it's hard to beat a sex link for personality and egg production. I also like the australorps and buff orps. Brown leghorns and Sicilian buttercups have been nutty as a squirrel turd.
Hell, might go grab some spring bitties today.
I was beginning to wonder if if anybody still called them bitties on here.

you can train that rooster to crow at specific times. mine crows at 6:00. Tells my wife and cousin to get out of bed and get the coffee ready

You're trying way too hard.

Pretty easy - I bought ours around this time last year, kept them in a brooder until they outgrew it in my Garage, built a 4x4 coop with 3 nesting boxes and a roosting bar - added a 4x8 enclosed attached run - I also enclosed under the coop which was raised about 2ft - I put there feed under the coop, water feeder in the run and in the yard.
I have never had to chase the in the coop it's like clockwork even when they were young. When they starting laying I would find eggs around the yard instead of the boxes so I bought a couple fake ceramic eggs and locked them up in the run for 5 days. Haven't had any more eggs in the yard.
Until we started getting fresh eggs I would never have believed anyone that said fresh eggs taste so much better but they do. We get 2 dozen a week and eat every one.

Chickens aren't laying give them a little cayenne pepper. I don't know why I got down voted. It works or your money back guaranteed.

Nothing worse than a neighbor with chickens. They never shut up

yes sir, you can train a rooster to do several things. he is like family. it starts at a young age, but with proper patience and a routine, you can train a rooster to be a very reliable "alarm clock" + or - 15 minutes. now that being said.... he can get temperamental around dinner time and tries to stay out late
two generations of raising chickens. we have fresh eggs daily and enough for the local neighbors.
