In the La climate if you want layers RIR is the way to go. We have had ours for almost a year now, they have laid an egg every day since they started, hot, cold, molting doesn't matter.

For those with aggressive Rhode Island reds, there are now basically two types. One type is the old heritage breed and will be more docile and have larger bodies. The other type is what is known as a production red. These lay more eggs are also smaller, but tend to be more aggressive and "flighty".

We have 5 buffs (4 hens) that are 20 or 21 weeks.

Be patient. They are big birds and take longer to mature.

My one buff is 20-25 weeks and isn't laying yet. Neither are my two wyandottes.

Have a question about chicken breeds.

I'm looking at getting another chicken. We had a polish that we got last week but she was really small and one of the dogs apparently thought she was a fun toy. Don't want another of those.

I'm thinking of getting a Barred Rock or another RIR.
I'm leaning Barred Rock but wanted to see what y'all think

Now I have 2 wyandotes, 1 buff and one RIR.

Barred Rocks are a great choice.

We have 2-3 Buffs laying.
1-3 Australorp laying
2-3 Barred Rocks laying

All are 22 weeks

All are well behaved. Most sit on my wife's lap. As I posted earlier, the first egg we got was laid on my wife's lap. She gets credit for being the mid-wife.

It's nice seeing the different colors. Wife's favorite to look at is the Australorp. Looks black, but shine different in the sun. Also one of them is my wife's favorite smugglers. Also one of the layers out of the three.

My vote.

We found our first egg yesterday. Chickens (buff Orps) are 21 weeks old today. Silly me, I looked in the nesting boxes and didn't see anything. She laid it right smack in the middle of the pine shavings in the roosting area.

We have a golf ball in each nesting box. Hopefully, they'll figure out that's where the eggs go.
