An interesting point. I have no experience with hand guns but I spent 6 years in the army national guard so I am fairly comfortable with an M-16. However I don't think I am allowed to have one of those. I have never been hunting or target shooting. Other than my military time I am a complete novice.

I am taking it because a relative got me in when somebody backed out because of the game on Saturday. Since I was offered the spot with all expenses paid I took it.

You can buy an ar. When you do acquire a pistol dry fire it over and over as you were forced to do in the guard before you ever fire it and it will make you a MUCH better shot. Must you qualify with the pistol you plan to carry at the cc class or can you use different firearms? If you can use different weapons borrow a pistol for this weekend.

1. I would be surprised in the instructor would allow that gun in his class. No offense, but I wouldn't let you bring it to one of my classes.
2. However, I would let you use one of my guns, in any of my classes, at no charge. People do this all the time -- maybe your instructor will do this. Who is the instructor ??
3. That gun was never designed to shoot ahigh volume of rounds. You presumably have no idea of how many rounds have already been fired through it. I would not shoot it (I place a lot of value on my fingers and eyes).

I like my SA XD 9mm with 3.8" barrel.

I didn't get mine from there but I did notice the price on it last time I was in there.
Share why you don't like them I haven't heard the reason.

^^^ This, or a Glock, or an HK.
9mm is a really good caliber with the new ammo that's available. The "good stuff" expands to .83 caliber out of my Glock 19 (and this gun holds 16 rounds).
You can't go wrong with any of these "top tier" guns. If the price tag is too steep, buy a used one. For self-defense, I'd swap 10 NIB Davis//Lorcin//Raven//et al for a used Glock 19

Glock 19. You can use it for home defense or carry.
If not that, get a Smith & Wesson M&P.

There are several guns that hover around $400 that are good. Here is an ad for a sig 2022 which is one of the best options at $400.
LINK
If I were you, I would spend $475 and get a lightly used gen 3 Glock 19. It is not tiny, but concealeable and is more proven in combat than any other pistol, especially at that price point. Everyone will recommend something because they are a fan or their cousin has one and loves it, but Glock is what you turn to when you have to trust a pistol with your life.

Your range has to be $500. Then hold a lot of guns.
Smith& Wesson makes a crappy one whose name I cannot recall. It is NOT the M&P. Guys help me. It is essentially a Taurus in quality.
Glock, Springfield, CZ (mine), Sig Sauer (P250 or P2022 are it for 500) are all fine.
Buddy swears by Glocks. He says the only way o frick em up is to clean them.

S&W Sigma. Now they have the improved "SD" which is the improved Sigma. It is a decent "budget" gun but still doesn't match the M&P in terms of quality, fit/finish, materials, and ergonomics. They charge less because it costs so much less to make.

+1. If you get a cheap gun, expect cheap performance. I think the best quality polymer gun at an affordable price is the Ruger SR9/SR40/SR45. Once you start getting between 300-400 for a new gun quality generally suffers.
And to echo Dawg, you should borrow a pistol from someone else or ask your instructor if you can use one of his handguns. Besides that gun being dangerous, generally 380s are hard to shoot. Borrow something full sized in 9, 40, or 45 for your class.

I have a S&W M&P wife has Glock 19. Like both but if you only could have one i would go with the glock.

It was given to me new. It has had 20 rounds shot through it. Do you think it could take 15 more?
Posted on 10/11/13 at 8:42 am to chryso
You will shoot more than 15 rounds in a conceal carry class. .380 is also not acceptable as a defense round. Not enough penetration. The average is < 12inches of penetration which won't do. Don't use a shitty gun when training. Rent a gun if they offer that service or borrow one from someone. Do not use something that is notorious to frick up when training. Don't forget your talking about your life here. This is worth the money.
