I think they are fine. The 553 is for SOCOM and they have the plastic cover.

What's y'all's opinion of the new Ruger AR 556?

Looking for my first AR, and for $599 it looks pretty awesome

At the end of the day, you will fit into 1 of 2 major categories of AR buyer/owners.

1. You will catch the fever and will eventually replace every piece from your original AR and therefore render your original purchase pointless except to have a plinker for fun.

2. Be completely content with the AR you're looking at, because you realize how cost prohibitive building a badass one is going to truly run you.

The cheaper AR models are all fine guns (though I haven't heard of that one) to play with and shoot a ton of rounds through to give you the initial experience. On one hand, if you buy a cheap one you COULD save money because you may not care to get into it all insane-like. It could also cost you money because you'll realize you will want to replace each part.

It's hard not to get caught up in the obsession.

As to that gun, I didn't look at it super hard, but I did like that it has a hammer forged barrel!

Get it and don't look back. Also look into the s&w m&p sport. Mil spec is overrated for the normal user. Nutnfancy runs non Mil spec ARs and he shoots more than 90% of us.

Chrome lined is good for shooters who shoot thousands and thousands of rounds. It does also make less accurate barrels.

Btw... In my honest opinion, most of the "out of the box" AR's out there are by far MORE than enough quality for a typical gun owner... unless the intent is to buy a gun that can get run through the mud, rain, and abuse and 10's of thousands of rounds and is dependable as a "SHTF" gun. :)

So, in all probability, if all you want is a fun AR to play with then get the cheaper type! You can still get a badass optic and have a great time.

Totally agreed.

And at the end of the day, you can always sell your gun for nearly what you bought it for ANYWAY, and jump into the rabbit hole of pimping your gun out like the rest of us.

Oh, dats nice. Looked grey before though lol. I like that color.

What do you have invested in coating? Equipment and such? Difficulty?

And you don't have a problem, I have a bunch oflowers (blems to billet) in the safe.

Article is way off here.

With the bottom falling out of the AR-15 market last year, a cheap entry-level AR-15 seems like the last thing that a major firearms manufacturer should be making.

Actually this is where they should be investing. I get a lot of people, especially soldiers, looking to buy an entry level AR. This is looking like a very solid rifle and an equally solid value.

Mil-spec is only what it is, over or underrated depends on the individual. I think Mil-spec is a good baseline for certain material and design specifications and manufacturers need to get back to adhering to those standards as much as they can in certain areas. Mostly with respect to the bolt carrier, bolt, gas system, and surface finishes/treatments. Chrome lining is good for anyone who shoots and the vast majority of shooters will either never notice the difference in accuracy or aren't good enough marksmen to make a difference anyway. The CHF barrels of the M240B have a much thicker chrome thickness spec and they are still held to match-grade tolerances. I don't think anyone is measuring groups at the range with them anyway. CL barrels are pretty cheap right now unless you get a fancy one anyway.

The paint isn't that cheap but all the accessories are what make it fairly expensive. Being that the items MUST be blasted with aluminum oxide you need some sort of blast cabinet and the aluminum oxide media isn't all that cheap either. So there isn't really a budget friendly entry level option because the process is very specific.

The biggest factor however is time. It takes a ton of time to do each piece and even longer to dial in your paint process. For example, even though the lower I just did looks pretty good, it does have some imperfections. So there is some cost to learning the whole process. I've had to dump mixtures down the drain because my airbrush was messing up and spattering paint. So that means I had to actually bake on the shite coating to harden it so that I can blast it off and start all over again. You can't just wipe the stuff off when you screw up.

Tl;dr : I have probably close to $700 in the entire setup (paint booth, toaster oven, airbrush, blast cabinet, paint etc.) and entirely too much time invested

Thats a damn good price, I'm tempted just to have a gun I can throw around and not give a shite about.

I've noticed that guns are dropping, but parts for piecing together seem to be about the same.
