Gonna do some turkey hunting for the first time this year. Besides the shotgun and shells, what are some things that are essential to be successful? Best type of calls for beginners as well? TIA

Got that already. A friend of mine (big turkey hunter) is gonna come with me and call for the first couple hunts. While deer hunting this year I saw a pack of turkeys quite often near my stand. Do I need to scout or anything like you do for deer prior to the season starting?

Page ChadjonesforHeisman and ask if he found the cracked corn. Then find out where Tenfoe is blurring property lines, dispense corn, profit.

On serious note, whatever call you're going to use, you need to get it and start practicing. Camo from head to toe. Vest with a cushion unless you want a sore behind.

Trust me, hunting turkeys in the spring is nothing like seeing them in the fall

Exactly. You see them in the fall because you have a pile of corn for them to eat

They are also bunched up in the fall/winter In the spring they can be miles away from there

Don't call too much.
Be absolutely fricking still.
If you think a buck is smart just you wait. If turkeys could smell we'd never kill any.

Calls are all personal preference. You can make a lot of the same sounds on a variety of calls. Pick one and practice with it. Pot call or a box call is probably the easiest to learn.

Comfortable stool or cushion is a must and patience is key.

I've been turkey hunting on my own for the past 5 years and every hunt I learn something knew. Be patient and enjoy the hunts.

An owl hooter and/or crow call. I take a little home made "blind" that I can stick in the ground around me. Good walking boots. Flashlight. Compass. Tick repellant.

This is pretty typical. Turkeys are always seen in abundance during deer season. Don't plan on seeing near that number in the spring.

Yes, you really should scout. Turkeys are extremely leery animals. They have excellent hearing and sight. If they could smell worth a damn, you'd probably never seen one within 100 yds. Go out in your area for a couple of weekends before the season. Try and get there well before sunrise. Listen for them coming off their roost. Then you can listen for their gobbling to get a general idea where they are. Later in the morning, go look for tracks in that area.

Turkey hunting can be very addicting, especially if you love being in the woods.

Learn to use a mouth call and a slate. Get an owl call to locate with. Get a turkey chair. Spring and fall are different worlds.
In the spring, the turkey is hunting you. You've heard "eyes like an eagle", same applies with a turkey. Any movement gives you away.
Go listen before the season and find where the turkeys are roosting.

Ok...that's what happened during deer season. Now, this is what will happen during turkey season:
