Target will likely be nutria. Range 50-200 yds. It's a duck lease , so the quieter the better. Bolt action. Composite stock. Please include a scope too in the rec. thanks guys.

huge fan of 204 ruger
however the BEST rat round I've ever used is remington 17 fireball
nutria rats explode on impact
hard to find though

for ease of ammo acquisition I'd go with 22mag or 17HMR

also, most varmint rounds are hyper velocity
that means they are hard to suppress
If you need quiet then you will sacrifice range using subsonics

as an owner of a 17hmr, 17mach 2, 22-250, 223, and 204

no its not close. The 204 BLOWS them out of the water. The 22-250 can do the same things as the 204 but the 204 has no recoil and you can watch your shots impact through the scope! The 17hmr isnt an adequate round for coyotes and such at all. Yeah it will kill them (with the right shot) but the 204 will kill them even if the shot isnt perfect. And the op said up to 200, lmao the 17 would be 3 feet off from where you aimed at 500yards. Hell after 150 it will float with the least bit of wind

How easy is it to find 204 ammo? Also, what manufacturer do you suggest?

What about a .22 Hornet? Inherited one from my Dad, but haven't used it yet.

The hornet is a great little round that has the same limitations as a 22 mag and 17 hmr. For more range and larger animals you will need to step up a notch or two to a 204, 22-250, ....

204 ammo is easy to find. They have it at walmart and academy and bass pro every time i go. I have shot winchester jacketed hollow points and hornacy ballistic tips. I normally dont like hornady ammo, and hate it in my 17hmr, but it is very very accurate in the 204 and will blow a hole in something.

As for the 22 hornet, its a hot little round! Its closer to the 17hmr and 22mag. It all depends on what you plan on using it for.

squirrels, rabbits, fox, coon, crows up to 100yards 17hmr, 22mag, 22 hornet will all be awesome.

anything larger like coyote, and anything past 100 yards. 22-250, 223, 204 (hadnt metioned the 17 wsm because i hadnt shot one)

22-250 and 204 are close rounds, both with the right scope will get you shots 300-500 yards if you like, difference is the 204 has less to no recoil and you can watch impact shots through the scope which is awesome.

223 isnt bad either, and ammo is cheap and easy to find "right now" but during any ammo ban scare or anything like that the price jacks up and its difficult to find.

.204 is a great caliber but it also very loud.
22LR is about 120-130db, the .204 is about 160db, unless you put a can on the rifle.

Why not just get an AR with an 18inch barrel?

.223/5.56 would be more than adequate and the platform is plenty accurate enough
