A Monterey man has entered a guilty plea in the killing of a 14-year-old Louisiana black bear. Authorities said the female bear had been killed and burned. A collar that wildlife authorities had placed on the bear had been removed. The Natchez Democrat reports that 24-year-old Duell Moreland pleaded guilty Thursday. He had turned himself in to Concordia Parish officials in November. Judge Kathy Johnson sentenced Moreland to 60 days in the parish prison, two years of probation, a $950 fine and a $10,000 civil restitution fee Moreland will pay to the state's Black Bear Program. His lifetime hunting license was suspended for five years.

Doesn't seem like a very harsh punishment to discourage people from doing it. Was there a reason he killed it?

I heard he had been a vegan for several years and he finally couldn't handle the internal rage that 9 years of kale milkshake eating had built up.

you really don't think 60 days in Jail and $10,000 would stop someone from killing a bear again?

This!!!! I'm fine with the 60 days as long as he pays the 10k fine. If not he should get more time.

eta: and I have a bigger problem with the burning of the bear and it being wasted than the killing of it.

It would me without a doubt. I wouldn't like watching my back 24/7 scared if someone is going to rape me and my beautifully shaped arse. Plus 10K can buy a shite ton of awesome guns and ammo.

I don't think he would kill one again but I just thought the punishment might be more. $$ is nothing to some people just for the story of 'I killed a bear!'

I do think hunting license should be revoked completely

Im willing to bet the 60 days is a suspended sentience. If he fails to pay or violates his probation he'll do the 60 days

I have a feeling this guy won't make the full 5 years of no hunting. From watching the show on the California fish and game the guys who poach and get licenses revoked rarely abide.

I bet your right and this is sad. Saw a child molester recently around here that was caught, he had been convicted in 70's or 80's and was sentenced to 8 years in prison and got a suspended sentence with 3 or 5 years of probation. How in the heck do you get sentenced to 8 years in state prison and end up not even on probation for 8 years.

$10,950 dollars and 2 years of probation are pretty harsh. I bet that guy doesn't have 50 cents in his bank account.

Well it looks like the prediction he wouldn't make 5 years without hunting came true...

You got to be a different kind of stupid to kill a black bear, get caught, then go and spotlight deer in a refuge. Hopefully they'll actually give him a sentence that will be a punishment

I'd be fine with 250 hours interstate trash collection, $10,000 fine and lifetime revocation of hunting license. Jail time will either be weekends or suspended.
