I didn't do a lot of research when I bought this one, I stopped by Academy to look for a cheap GPS/Depth finder combo and these were on sale so I bought it. I may upgrade one day but it's not extremely high on the prioriety list currently.

I can definitely see the benefit when fishing a new area.

And there's nothing wrong with having cool toys on the kayak.

ETA: Anybody have any experience with the Humminbird Fishin Buddy 110? I don't really need a GPS with the maps and cell phone, but I would like to have a depth finder.

Those look great.

Strongback- seems like that fishing buddy would get in the way. I think they have better ways to mount a depth finder. And just a depth finder can be had for pretty cheap these days.

Not to completely hijack the thread but have been considering getting a Lowrance inexpesivley (the 500HDI seems to fit that bill) to run along with my Garmin as back up and to have access to the Standard mapping card. I know nothing about Lowrance do they make a mount that I could use to hang it off my electronics box from above?

It should work

WHODAT I cant figure out how when I zoom in to get it to clear up. I downloaded all zoom levels from 13-20, I tried a high resolution. I'm using ArcGIS because I cant get google satellite to work.

I tried 10 different ways of downloading and playing with the zoom.

I might try bing maps next

the only way to get it clear is to make the resoultion 1 to 64, that takes forever to make. i do zooms 14 16 and 20. thats plenty good enough for me but i have an elite 7 so my screen is big. i use ArcGIS as well. try it out and let me know. my buddy does zoom 18 only and resolution 1 thru 64

DIY maps work on Elite 4 HDI as well. Not sure why Standard and others don't "sell" maps for them because they load the same AT5 files.

Regarding a little technique for kayaking... I download my own sat imagery using Bing, which a winter time / low tide for most of SE Louisiana. I then use the low water Bing imagery to create my own routes to mark how to navigate through the marsh in low water. This saves me countless time and energy on the water. There are no "wrong turns" in the marsh anymore.

Insight Map Creator does not seem to be available from the Lowrance site. I found download link in a youtube video description but the process crashes when you swtich from keyhole mode to raster mode.

I haven't had the chance to dig in a find the problem but the errod I'm getting is coming from the /insightmapcreator.DAT file.

Insight is finicky and seems to have a lot of issues. I know I've seen that error before. It runs on my laptop but not my desktop.

I think I may have found a fix. I'm running the merge now to make sure its working. Might take a while...
