My maps are way out of date (software up-to-date). A good bit of the water I drove across was land, on the GPS. Can I update this without paying for Navionics?

Unfortunately all map upgrades are not free. Look at Navionics or Standard mapping cards. Best $200 you will spend for fishing.

What lowrance unit do you have? i have a bunch of satellite maps made for lowrance units. i would be more than happy to share them.

also agree with what he said a 200$ nmapping card is worth it but i went a different route and made my own. they work great

Don't get Navionics when you can make your own. There are a few threads on this and how to DIY. I know WHODAT and Elusiveporpi can tell you what you need to know. I can do it just when I zoom in it doesn't get very clear, so I'm trying to figure that part out still.

BTW it will only work on HDI or HDS units.

If you don't mind sharing them, I would appreciate it. I have been eyeing those standard maps pretty hard, just can't make myself spend the money for all of south la.

What options are out there for the Elite 4 DSI units? Or am I just SOL unless I upgrade?

I have the Elite 5. I think we're SOL. Not sure though.

Elite 5 DSI (will not) Elite 5 HDI (will work)

If you have the means to spend you cant possibly go wrong with the HDS 7 Touch.

The new Elite 7 HDI with CHIRP is a really nice unit, but you can find a HDS 7 touch for a little bit more. Only the HDS can do structure scan and the 7 touch is all built in. No more extra box to mount.
You can also get it without structure scan for a bit cheaper.

Oh this is on a kayak, definitely can't justify a $1000 unit for that.

I just printed hi-def maps off Google Earth Pro (free) for all the places that I kayak fish and had them laminated. Cheap alternative to a GPS.

For a kayak I would definitely go with a Elite 5 HDI. If you can get the last years model without the CHIRP you can get them for pretty cheap.

Amazon still has them I think.

Good alternative but if you start getting really far in the marsh having a track to follow back helps. Of course in a kayak you will most likely still be able to see the launch from wherever your fishing.

That's typically what I do, especially if I'm in a new area. My main purpose for a GPS is to keep myself from getting turned around/lost, hasn't happened yet but you never know. I'd like to be able to zoom in/out and actually see details of areas I'm in, for the most part the Elite 4 shows I'm on land constantly.

If you are in shallow tidal marsh, most stock maps are going to show that you are on land.

Reddish what's your email? I'm pretty sure I know you...I'll hook ya up.

To answer all questions I made them using the two programs. And if you have elite 5 hdi or elite 7 hdi it will work, chirp as well and all Hds units. I just made some maps for a fella in Bama and the turned out good.

Any more questions feel free to ask. If you need an area made I can do that as well. But I have most saltwater areas covered we all fish.
