Looking for a gift for my 10 year old son

He's blown up with the deer bug this year. More interest than he's ever shown in anything. I've been having him use a buddy's .223. I'm wanting to get him his own. He's 56" tall weighs about 70 pounds. I'm looking at a marlin 336y. Anybody have and ideas, recommendations?
TIA
TIA

7mm-08 Tikka T3. Great youth caliber that is even popular amongst adults. Perfect for taking deer and antelope all the way up to black bear.

7mm-08 is an ideal round for starting off, as well as staying with him for many years. Buddy bought one for his girlfriend years ago, and after they busted up it became a camp gun. We all still use that thing.

If you are looking to get a Marlin 336 then you have to go with a 30-30

I grew up with a .243. I still use it several hunts a year.

The only reason I prefer the .243 over the 7mm-08 is price and availability of ammo.

Measure him to see what his length of pull is. I was surprised at how small my kids actually are, and you may find that even a youth gun is to long. As to type of gun, I recommend getting him what he is most likely to be using when he is an adult: a bolt action scoped rifle. That way he'll get good experience with the most common setup for hunting deer. There are all sorts of choices of course. A Savage Axis XP youth would get the job done economically, and without the fuss of mounting and bore-sighting a scope.

My 9 yr old took his first deer with my AR in 6.8 spc. It has a 20 inch barrel, is extremely accurate, and is suppressed.
However, some SJW's here apparently took issue with it because they were chicken shits and down voted my post of him getting his first deer instead responding that they took issue.

I have a youth model .243 that my dad got me... It has sentimental value but I'm pretty sure my son will never hunt a whitetail with it. 7mm-08 is a great whitetail round regardless of age, sex, or size.
