Savage Axis .243 my boy, 11, handles his rifle well. I like to shoot it too.

.308 with reduced recoil. That's what mine shoot. It has been great doesn't kick, and when he gets older he can go to regular laods. I shot this .308 until I was 32 then got new gun. I hunted with it for twenty years.

So I think I've settled on a Remington 700 SPS .243
Comes in at under 7lbs.
Anybody have any experience with that gun? Pros, cons?

Got with the .260 or .270 over the .243....no real difference in recoil and considerably better ballistics not to mention he will never really need another gun

No experience with that rifle but I'm sure it will shoot just fine. The .243 is a deer killer from way back, it's also half the price of 7mm 08 you will also be able to find it in any walmart. I would suggest a .308 with reduced recoil loads until he gets a little older and bigger.
