I have both the "old school" FS12T and the FS128T from Ascend. The "old school" FS12T was a great starter yak and I still have it so buddies can use it. Cannot stand in it, at least I couldn't. I think as far as starter yaks go, the new Ascend FS12T looks very promising. If you are able to stand in it, that's a bonus.

The only thing to watch out for is craftsmanship. On my FS128T, I has to seal all the hatches, etc because the deck had some flex in it and I would take on a little water. Hopefully they learned from it and fixed that issue.

I can tell you that raised seat will change your fishing experience. Keeps you cooler in the summer, keeps your arse dry, and your butt from being numb. Good luck.

You hit the nail on the head. There are plenty of better yaks out there, and if you want to get a used one in that price range, you can find better yaks. But for the price for a new yak, I do not think there is a better one out there. (Haven't seen the new one, but it looks similar to my FS128T)

I don't know which one to get if we're on the subject.
I can get any kayak Massey's carries at cost. I'm thinking Hobie but there's so many things to consider when buying one.
(currently have 12' heritage SOT)

I really really want the Slayer 12. Masseys jacks their price out the roof.

The only reason I went ahead with the FS128T is because I got it at 40% off, employee discount from a buddy.

I plan on upgrading again at some point. Debating on a peddle drive. Just not sure about the hassle of using it in shallow water and the fact that it weighs a million pounds. Like the Diablo, Jackson and KC yaks also.

Exactly where I'm stuck. I fish a lot of shallow marsh but also cover a pretty good distance when fishing.
The Jackson's are awesome from what I've seen.

Cuda is a great fishing boat, but pretty heavy. The Big Rig looks awesome and even more stable than the Cuda that I stand and fish from frequently. An oft-overlooked yak that is extremely versatile and amazingly stable is the Native Ultimate. For all-around versatility, it is hard to beat. I would hesitate to take it out somewhere with waves since it doesn't self-drain, but otherwise it is a dynamite platform to fish from. It tracks well and it extremely comfortable.

How far beneath the boat does the peddle drive extend? Although I don't like fishing in a few inches of water, I normally cross over these really shallow areas getting to my fishing spots.

I really want one of these for fishing trout streams up here in the northeast. That way I can ride up river and float back to my truck. Can't justify the cost though.

Not sure. I think someone said you need at least a foot of water on order to not drag them. But I occasionally go over oyster beds. I bet that will tear up the fins.

I've seen a couple but never fished out of one. To me, outside of peddle drive kayaks, the top of the line are (in no particular order):
Jackson Cuda (12 & 14)
Jackson Big Rig
Native Ultimate
Native Slayer
Wilderness Systems Ride 115x
Wilderness Systems Commander
Diablo Adios
Diablo Chupacabra
KC K12
NuCanoe Fronteir 12

Ones I have never seen and want to check out:
Delta 12.5 Catfish
Feel Free Moken Angler 13
Freedom Hawk Pathfinder
Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game II

Any of the ones in the top list are wonderful yaks, it really just boils down to personal preference and what you'll be using it for. That OK Prowler on the bottom list looks awesome. Definitely want to get my hands on one. Prowler Big Game II website

That is a lot. I have drifted in less than 4 inches in my dad's heritage. I don't bring a bunch of crap with me in it though. There is one bay I cross near basons that is so shallow. I get a good head of steam and coast over it.

Water gets low in the winter. You can pull the pedal drive out and paddle...seems like a PITA. But to be able to peddle and fish at the same time is a pretty big advantage...especially for bass fishing and fishing in the wind.

You need at least two, maybe 3 boats to cover all of your intended uses. Added bonus: with 2 you can bring a friend/SO.
