Mary Young would be the person to speak with about Flat Coats if you want one that retrieves or capable of hunting
She could maybe direct you to someone with a litter. She is/was in charge of the Flat coat society
You would most likely not want to pay for a puppy from a litter of hers. But she would be the person to talk to about finding one.
I saw her run several of them in the field trials

The breed, not just your dog.

Absolutely. Granted it is important that you get your pup from a hunting line, but the Boykin Spaniel Society does a pretty good job of keeping Boykins as a sporting dog and not just as a show dog or pet. Their breed standards are intended to keep the dog small and sporting with a natural desire to retrieve and flush.

I can vouch on the Boykins

Great dog. I have a 2 year that is obsessed with hunting (and playing outside in general). He'll duck hunt all day, and is turning into a damn good deer tracking dog.

Perfect size (mine weighs 38) to be an indoor dog, but can do pretty much the same as the big dogs.

That's a big Boykin too. Bijou is only 28# and full grown.

I have mentioned it before, but they have proportionately larger mouths/heads than labs so they have no trouble picking up larger birds, etc... even though they are smaller dogs. They are built solid and stout.

I friend of mine has a Boykin that' smart as a whip and is a great little retriever. But is not very hardy when it's hot or cold. It had a heat stroke dove hunting last year that could have ended badly. Luckily we had a vet out there with us that knew what to do and the dog ended up being alright. It was hot, but not excessively hot. My hairy arse Golden and another boys black lab did fine. Not sure if that's common with Boykin's or if it's just his dog. It's a house dog that's doesn't spend much time outside, so that may have something to do with it too.

Yeah mine is big for a Boykin. He's built differently than some of those that you see with shorter legs. He has long legs and a broad chest. Very athletic looking than some of the other Boykins I've seen

I have hunted mine when it's been iced over and his hair was frozen up. He was wearing a vest and did fine (he didn't want to leave) but I probably would have left him at the house if it was a few degrees colder. Again, mine is big for a Boykin compared to one like Coco's so maybe he can handle it a little better

I had one up from Baton Rouge for the first of Speck season. He did a good job for being so hard headed. I'll flip you his phone number if you'd like it.

Probably. My boykin has no problem with the heat or cold and she's only 28#. We have hunted in 100 degree weather and below freezing weather with no issues. Her coat changes dramatically from teal season to late duck season.

She is a one of a kind, prized championship Irish Setter/ Brittany Spaniel mix.

one of the five best overall dogs I have seen was a top brass golden.......

was as hard as a chessie and style of a lab... and as most goldens was great at the house/camp...

that was the one drawback with our brown dogs... is

if you showed any ambivalence about food you were eating or planning to eat.. well.....it got eaten
