Also happened to a charter guide in Dularge recently

quote:

A 70-year-old woman nearly lost her hand after contracting flesh-eating bacteria while fishing with her husband on Alabama’s Gulf Coast last week. The unidentified woman reportedly reached into a bucket of live shrimp bait and pricked the back of her hand, though it was not clear if the infection was a result of the shrimp or the water they were fishing in that then entered the wound, Gulf Coast News Today reported.

Vibrio

quote:

For outdoor enthusiasts, Eschete’s advice is simple and straightforward: If you suffer any type of injury while fishing, swimming or working in a saltwater or brackish environment here in South Louisiana — from being poked by a fish or jabbed with a hook — wash the wound quickly and thoroughly. “Flush it out with copious amounts of bottled or sterile water, not ocean water,” she said. “You can also use a 1:10 bleach solution, but not pure bleach — you’ll burn yourself. I suggest lots of bottled water. “What you’re trying to do is flush out those bacteria. Use soap and water, and lots of it.” And if you do receive an injury that begins to swell and turn bright red, don’t wait to get medical attention

I always use minnow dip net to retrieve my shrimp. I don't kill any shrimp with sunscreen and shrimp don't kill me with vibrio. The risk is still there but it dramatically reduces the chance.

Since I'm pretty fond of my hands, what's the best thing to keep in the tackle bag to combat this? Betadine? Surgical sponges?

The article says bleach, but that doesn't seem very convenient

All the shrimpers I know pour green rubbing alcohol when they pick their hand.

I've thought about a bleach solution in a spray bottle?
Most people use a net too, but I got stuck 3 times last week and one time today.

Bleach loses effectiveness over time and with sun/heat exposure. Do you change it frequently?

Bleach is not really that good for using on your body nor does it keep well if stored for long periods. Use alcohol, antibiotic, or soap and water if you have it.

I keep bleach in a spray bottle, change every 3 months, and betadine. So far so good... (nocks on wood).

Can't see how "expired" bleach would be less effective than flushing with drinking water.

Bleach can basically separate into salt and water. Wouldn't be less effective than just water, but might not be any better.
