And for argument's sake, my husband is a rice/soybean/crawfish farmer. He'd love to not have government subsidies ... he is in the group that thinks the market would correct itself. The farmers in our area are NOT big corporate groups ... he farms I think roughly 2500 acres ... plants about half of that each year (you rotate for those who don't know).
He's as efficient as they come ... and we certainly aren't the ones buying a new truck every year or 2 ... hell we've bought 3 in 16 years and #3 was ONLY because #2 was totaled (old man driver hit him ... smh).
It's big business ... and for the guy who posted the "average income" of 80somethingK, yeah, there are some good years but there are some years where you make zilch. Bills are paid and you don't take a vacation but really it's all good as the bills have been paid. Hell there were years that our kids qualified for free lunch. Take that 80somethingK and divide by the number of hours put in ... I 100% promise you it will be less than minimum wage. But that's ok -- he loves what he does and he's one of the best farmers in our area. We get calls on a regular basis about "can you please take over my land?". To take it or not in itself is not always an easy decision and is always well though out.
Now for those complaining, please don't choke on your mouth that is filled with food as you're doing the complaining!!
(And for the record, the "pay to not plant" wasn't in place when we started ...)

Did we figure out if I was a scumbag if I enter some property into CRP/WRP?

One more thing to consider, the U.S. Gov't using farmers as pawns in foreign policy. For example, Jimmy Carter implementing a grain embargo when he was President. It took years to repair the damage done to the U.S. export business. Some may say it has never fully recovered.

Define scumbag.
You are no different than a farmer taking a handout. Or a guy who couldn't afford to go to college who gets up every morning and punches the clock for $10 an hour to try to put food on the table and may need some gov assistance like foodstamps, healthcare, etc.
I'm not sure anyone has concrete numbers on who does/doesn't need welfare but there's alot more hard working people out there getting some assistance than most people realize.
Having said that, I'm against ALL welfare. The problem with most people is they're against it except when it comes to shite they want. You're either for it or against it. Can't have it both ways my man.

I guess I'm for it then because I can't afford to plant trees on my property. I want in on the program because the gubment is gonna pay for the planting and pay me a payment for letting them plant. Then I am going to grow monster bucks until the term expires then cut the trees for a profit.

I havent looked into it that much but my gripe is more with the crop subsidies than the conservation stuff.

There is a little more to it than what I posted but the agreement is basically saying I will not molest, cut, destroy any property that has been planted for an agreed upon number of years. I feel like it is worth something because I will be losing revenue from that property. The upside is it grows monster deer and one day the trees will belong to the landowner.

Everyone thinks farmers are the big dogs in the market. "Look at the prices of soybeans and corn. Man, wish I was a farmer". Farmers are the bottom feeders yet the American farmers support nearly 3/4 of the worlds population. Everyone feeds off the farmers, fertilizer companies or seed companies. Then prices plummet and farmers are still being fed off. Then throw in a drought like the Midwest 2012. If you get that a weather episode across the whole country that disrupts all the crops. You'll be thankful farmers have government support bc your $10 hr job will put food on your plate.

I have some buddies with wrp/crp in NCLA so I am a little familiar with it. I will be damn near gray by the time the trees they planted will be near big enough to cut. If I had property I would diff look into it as well.
