heading up there in a week for 8 days. I go up that way a couple times a year.. but have never fished. I am going to pack my waders and my ultra light spinning combo this trip. Would appreciate any tips, what lures to use, etc. Never in my life fished for trout. I have heard i cant use barbed hooks so basically all of my tackle is useless if this is the case. Anyone with experience please let me know what i need for best results. Thanks

The few times we've been, colored salmon eggs thrown upstream and allowed to pass by rocks protruding from the bottom have been the ticket. Had no idea my first trip, so I just hung near the locals and that's what they seemed to do. Asking around, most of them said corn kernels out the can worked well too.

we were there 4 years ago..

hit a bunch of creeks in greenbrier area bunch of small trout and brookies.

if you have kids the stocked part of gburg is a lot of fun.. especially on the day they stock it.. which is once a week.

best fishing though was on indian reservation. but any creek you can hike on or get away from road will work.

go to the fly fishing shop by apple barn in gburg they will steer you right.

Did better in Cherokee just a few miles south for what it is worth.
Tried a fly rod and enjoyed it but caught more on the ultralight triggerspin.

Bought my bait in a shop right on the river. Used some brown nymphs I had along with some flies I picked up in the shop.

Just used very small spinners available at the bait shop on the ultralight.

The Cherokee tribe stocks the hell out of that river in an attempt to draw in tourist. LINK

could have swore corn was illegal! Is that just in the park? and not in the towns?

Also... you just go to the grocery store and buy regular old canned corn? Please more details? Also what hooks do you use, can they be barbed or no? Any weight?

I don't doubt it, I have very limited experience and can only offer info from that. I will try the corn if/when I return.

Like I said, we just used the jars of salmon eggs. I assumed they were talking about corn from a can. I think they have hooks specific for the eggs

I think that artificial bait is illegal in the parks and baiting (dumping out a can of corn before you fish) is illegal outside of the parks. The trout are fed corn as they are being raised, so there's the reason corn works so well. Mepps or Rooster Tails seemed to produce pretty good results and I've caught trout in Alaska, Arkansas, and Tennessee on them.

This is the park I visited: Great Smoky Mnts National Park

Lures, Bait, and Equipment
Fishing is permitted only by the use of one hand-held rod.

Only artificial flies or lures with a single hook may be used. Dropper flies may be used. Up to two flies on a leader.

Use or possession of any form of fish bait or liquid scent other than artificial flies or lures on or along any park stream while in possession of fishing tackle is prohibited. Prohibited baits include, but are not limited to, minnows (live or preserved), worms, corn, cheese, bread, salmon eggs, pork rinds, liquid scents and natural baits found along streams.

Use or possession of double, treble, or gang hooks is prohibited.

Fishing tackle and equipment, including creels and fish in possession, are subject to inspection by authorized personnel.

Use 4Lb florocarbon or green line maximum and get a rod that can chunk 1/64oz jigs. Drift them 4inches off the bottom w a small cork and mend your line. That's the basic trout set up. No barb is no problem , you will actully hook more , just keep the slack out of the line. Might look for a lure called trout Magnet. And floats for them.

Good luck, I ain't a trout fisherman but know quite a few.

In the summer you don't need waders. Just wear a bathing suit.
