Yesterday from the deer stand I saw this bird on the ground I couldn't identify. I could never get a good pic of it. But it was a larger bird, grayish brown with black stripes and red or orange on top of its head. Much bigger than the red birds around it. Any ideas? Maybe some kind of partridge?

Sounds like a thrush to me

Was it darting around on the ground? Flipping leaves and twigs?

Fairly certain(going by your description) it was one of these. They are pretty large

Definitely wasn't a woodpecker. It was fat and round with a short peak. It flew but only a short distance and spent most of its time on the ground. I thought it was a quail but the colors were wrong.
