Looking at google images, I'm thinking the chukkar is closest, all except the base color (in some images) and the rest crest on the head.

The red spot was on the very top, like a cap, not really on the back of the neck, but yea I might be willing to concede that it was one of those Alx. Thats a woodpecker? I only saw it on the ground or very near the ground in a bush. I suppose it's possible.

Yeah, but they forage on the ground way more than any other woodpecker. In fact, I've never seen one actually pecking wood.

I'm willing to bet thats what it was then. Seemed fatter than the pictures show, but it could have been ruffled up since it was so cold saturday.

everyone here immediately thinks peckerwood

OP swears it is not a WP

everyone continues to suggest WP but also look for other possibilities

4 pgs later OP agrees that it is a WP and horses are more common in TX than zebras.

Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump.

It didn't look and act like no woodpecker I've ever seen. The pictures of that thing are still not exactly what I saw. The other pictures posted of the flicker didn't look anything like what I saw. I'm still not convinced it was a flicker. Way fatter and the red spot is not the same. Also in that description from the link they say there should be red or yellow under it's wings. I saw nothing like that while it was flying around.
