I began painting in the late 90's for bow hunting. Once I could grow facial hair(not allowed in high school) I started doing it for duck hunting.

just keep my hat low and my face close I the front of the blind when they come in

easier in a marsh/field blind. Try standing next to a tree in the timber and tell me they don't flare of your face.

if you are in my blind, you will have a mask on or your face will be black.

it has been like that always.

I am not going to stop because new people think it looks cool. White faces stick out like a sore thumb.

On the rare occasion I duck hunt, it's in a blind in the marsh so it's not an issue. I don't care what anyone puts on their face

I like putting mud on my face. I'm hardcore like that though.

Yep. Which is why I paint. I don't even like wearing a billed hat duck hunting.

Me with paint, with a still head, only moving eyeballs is much more concealed than anyone in a mask and baseball cap twisting their head all around to see them circle.

Being still is most important. This is why I refuse to wear a mask for bowhunting. It requires way too much head movement to get your eyes on the animal.

I do love seeing the folks dressed head to toe in camo for the ride to the camp.....especially deer hunters......

Go ahead and smell like 4 circle k's and 3 gas stations when you hit the woods.. and let the thugs hanging in the parking lot know you are going hunting and have guns in the back of the truck whilst you hit on his girlfriend at the cashier...

yeah you white fishbellie white folks at a bit of a disadvantage here... but.. IMHO..

camo itself is overrated....

being still and in shadows.. is largely ignored by most hunters.....

You mean you don't have to be camo'd out head to toe to sit in a box stand? Color me shocked.

I wear camo in the box most of the time because it is warm, but on several occasions I have worn jeans. Someone made fun of me one time and I asked if deer could see through plywood. They didn't know what to say

I remember you saying something about that in another thread.

You can usually pick out new hunters because their face paint is "pretty". The old hats just slap some on all haphazard like

and their camo all fits perfectly....

FWIW had lunch the other day with someone getting into duck hunting... about the things he needed most..other than location.....

1. thermacell
2. thermos
3. good socks
4. TWO pairs of gloves
5. always always keep a change of clothes......

everything else... meh.....

After firearms and bows, the thermacell is the greatest invention hunting has ever seen. That was solid advice right there

I PS'd it with the two most important calls in south la..

a whistle and a teal call..... the sounds you can make with both of those can turn bad days into good days and good days into great ones - provided you have birds in area...

without his thermacell - choupique II would not have taken his nice 9 during early bow season... period.

TP is a staple of any good field bag. Learned that after I lost many socks

Occasionally I'll go to the blind in an old Carhartt coat when I know there's gonna be rookies in the blind, just for the looks I get at the boat.

May or may not pull it off and hunt in a brown vest and camo pullover lol.

Truer words have never been spoken. The saying "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" rings so true to toilet paper
