Or any other holster, for that matter.

Some of you may remember that I finally got a 1911 after years of saying I was going to get one. It's my one and only handgun, although I grew up with long guns. I don't plan to carry it much, but I would like to take it with me sometimes if I'm hiking, camping, or fishing with my daughter out in the middle of nowhere.

Anyway, I'm just looking for some suggestions/recommendations/things I might not have considered/etc.

My usual summer attire is shorts and a tshirt. And I hate belts, but that looks like something I'm just going to have to get over. My gun is a 4.25" "commander" size, if that makes any difference.

If you don't care about concealing it I would just get a paddle holster. Check safari land paddle holsters. I think that would be your best bet.

WC low profile

I have one of these for my commander and it rides close to the body and can be concealed very easy with a untucked shirt.

Can't go wrong with Safariland. Probably my favorite holster.

CrossBreed Holsters

I just bought a CCW holster from CrossBreed holsters. They have several options, and do good quality work.

Thanks, everyone. This gives me a good starting point, so I can narrow it down.

Teague,
Sounds like outside the waistband (OWB) would suit your needs. I cc an all steel Commander 1911, as well; it's not a light gun. Having said that, I think wearing a good gun belt will be helpful for you. For OWB cc, two classic 1911 holsters are the the "Askins/Nelson" and the "Easily removable loops" holsters. Typical examples are made by R. Grizzle Leather., the "Working Man" and the "Georgia Snap 2." I've got one of his holsters and am very happy w/ it. I'm shopping for an OWB holster for my Commander and may end up w/ his "Georgia Snap 2".

A classic IWB holster for the 1911 is the "Summer Special", seen here at Brownell's. Lots of folks make their version of the "SS."

Funny you say that, I bought a Grizzle for my Commander after sending back a Summer Special (may have just been a bad one, lots of trigger guard exposure).

I have a couple Grizzles now.

If you carry outside the waistband, I am a huge fan of Bladetech holsters. They have full coverage over your gun and are injection molded rather than just fitted kydex.

I ordered a holster from Grizzle about a month ago. The lead time is pretty long at the moment, but they were super nice when I talked to them. And their holsters get good reviews. Very excited to come home one day and it's sitting in the mailbox.

1. If you're looking at paddle holsters, you should at least try a Comp-Tac. They have a 30 day money-back trial policy -- wear it for a month and if you don't like it, send it back for a full refund. (All you'll be out is shipping cost.)

I use a Comp-Tac paddle holster to carry a Glock 19. Have used one on a daily basis for a long time (probably 10-12 years?). I tried plenty of other paddle holsters before this -- none come close to the Comp-Tacs.

The other brands I tried fell into one of two categories --- either they came off your belt when you didn't want them to (not secure), or they wouldn't come off when you did want them to (had to unhook belt and unsnap pants). The Comp-Tac is the only one I've tried that is super secure, but can be removed in 2-3 seconds.

2. As was mentioned, you'll need a decent gun belt for carrying that pistol. I've used leather belts from "The Belt Man" for about 10 years. They're the best I've found.

I recently tried a leather belt from Comp-Tac (not sure when they started making belts). I wore it for a few weeks. It's a close equivalent to those made by the Belt Man.

The leather belts from Comp-Tac and the Belt Man are much better gun belts than any of the nylon Wilderness or Blackhawk tactical/instructor gun belts -- far better.

That's true, but a classic gun like the 1911 deserves to be nuzzled inside a nice piece of leather, instead of a piece of stiff, impersonal Kydex.....

After about 4 hours of reading and saying, "Ok, I'll get that one...", then five minutes later saying, "No, I'll get that one...", I decided I'm going to make one. I know what you're thinking, but I have a fair amount of leather working experience. I'd considered it earlier, but I was a little unsure about being able to form the leather correctly. After a little research, I feel pretty good about it. I already have all the tools and a cow hide that's the correct weight. I looked around and ended up paying $10 for a pattern so I won't have to wing it there. Anyway, I'm going to give it a shot. I might end up buying another holster anyway, but I'm still waiting for my CCL to come through. So, I have time to play around. Anyway, I'm just going to try a pancake style holster. If I don't like it or I can't make it right, I'll make or buy something else.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. I'll post a pic of whatever I come up with.

I have the Royal Guard IWB and like it very much. Also have the Milt Sparks IWB. Both for a Kimber Ultra Carry Pro 3".

Good for you!! I made a couple leather rifle slings once because I thought I could do as good as the custom ones that cost more money than I could afford to spend. Both turned out pretty good and I still use one of them today. I've always been partial to the "pancake" holster. The first holster I bought when I was in high school was a pancake holster made by Roy Baker, the father of the pancake holster. Fast forward >20 years. I've now moved to LA and Roy Baker has moved his shop to Magnolia, AR, 30 miles from me. I bought an early Ruger P89 and had the privilege of watching him put the finishing touches on a holster at his shop for the gun. Keep us up to date w/ your holster adventure.
