I've never shot anyone in self defense so I don't know if there is any truth to this, but some cops have told me they take your gun and it goes into evidence. Once in evidence its really hard/expensive to get back through the court. I wouldn't use my grandfathers bring back Nazi Luger or an expensive/sentimental gun. I could handle losing a $500 Glock 17 though.

The chances of a home invasion are extremely small to begin with. If you're going to prepare for that extremely small chance why not be prepared for others?

This is where preppers have a mindset advantage - and I like the Zombie Apocalypse preppers, in particular. Why? Because it is never going to happen.

But - that mental model is highly adaptable. If one is prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse, in the abstract, it is difficult to imagine a scenario where those preparations aren't transferable.

I'll try this question here rather than going to the OT.
Good decision.

What recs would you have for a home defense weaponry?

I was thinking I would start with a tactical shotgun and maybe a revolver (no jamming risk). Do you have any recommendations for calibers?

Best self defense gun is shotgun. 12 gauge has been the traditional choice, but 20 is good as well. Choose whatever you and your family can best handle. And don't worry, a 12 gauge "tactical" shotgun is no more powerful than a 12 gauge hunting shotgun. For many families, a youth model 20 is the best choice. Here's a good shotgun self defense ammo article. You'll frequently see recs here for birdshot. They have their reasons, but I agree instead w/ the above article: Birdshot at close range may cause a bad wound, but stopping power can be limited due to decreased penetration. Do your research and decide for yourself what you're most comfortable w/.

After shotguns, most folks would next turn to a handgun. I'd suggest a full size (e.g. NOT a compact) handgun in 9mm, 40 S&W, 357 Mag, 357 Sig or 45 ACP. Revolvers are fine, but they're not foolproof and have limited round capacity. Use whatever handgun ammo your local LEO's use.

And yes, don't forego OTHER layers of home defense, including house dogs, security systems, security locks, etc.

Shotgun, carbine, or handgun or combos of the three. Shorter the better on the shotgun. Don't forget a home defense plan and placement of the weapons for quick access.

You shouldn't select your home defense weapon based solely on a fear of losing it. My primary is a suppressed SBR. It's a very familiar platform and a lot easier to move with than a longer firearm. It would hurt to lose it, but the alternative would hurt a lot more.

That said, I wouldn't recommend a Luger anyways.

Why? Sure, it gives you much more capacity, but you don't have near the stopping power with an AR over a 12 gauge shooting buck shot.

You're not being fair here. You're saying with a shotgun you can use buckshot but with an AR you're limited to hardball ammunition. If you're going to give yourself the ideal ammunition choice with your shotgun, do the same with the rifle. There are tons of quickly-expanding AR rifle rounds out there that are plenty effective.

I understand the comfort of having 30 rounds, but the practicality is not there. At most there might be 3 or 4 guys, and your chances of encountering and Having to shoot it out with all of them are extremely small.

Preparing for a best case scenario never helps anyone.

Find me one person who has ever been in a life-threatening encounter and said, "you know, I wish I had fewer rounds!" I'll wait...

EDIT: Forgot to mention that AR15s are an ideal long gun for females. Find me one small female that can shoot 3" 00 buckshot as fast as she can an AR15. I'll continue to wait...

Mine is my .300aac SBR or an AK.

Don't say it will never happen. Friend/coworker's wife Es robbed at gun point in her home last week.

Another guy that I used to work with was beat to gel with his wife and daughter we watching a few months ago, again in his home.

It can happen and it does happen everywhere every day.

ETA: these are both very affluent neighborhoods in the burbs of Memphis.

I like the AR in a gunfight, but for the a brief short range defensive encounter....the 12 gauge reigns supreme.

It is an instant game ender with enough pop behind it that typically the guy on the other end will not get a shot off after being hit with the round.

Also using a slug, anything from the knee up is fatal.....wow.

Short barrel AR .300 blackout with a silencer.

Has stopping power with a 220 grain bullet. It is maneuverable inside a home. It can mount a light and a red dot which would aid in accuracy in a break in situation. It won't destroy your ability to hear if you have to use it inside your house. You can kill varmits around your house without disturbing neighbors, so it has uses if you never have that break in.

Not saying the 12 gauge is a pea shooter or anything because it creates some devastating wounds.

But in the same amount of time you can get about 2-3 rounds off with an AR.

I think both are excellent CQB weapons and it really depends on the shooter. For a small female, the AR is easily a better choice though.
