I'll try this question here rather than going to the OT. What recs would you have for a home defense weaponry?

I was thinking I would start with a tactical shotgun and maybe a revolver (no jamming risk). Do you have any recommendations for calibers?

I don't hunt anymore although I did fairly often as a kid. I've been to the shooting range probably a dozen times. So I'm not a completely novice shooter.

I'm a fan of pistols with a least a light for home protection. I just find it easier to move around a structure and hunt with a smaller firearm.

Personally I use a G17 with a tlr-2 and a klarus xt1-c as bump in the night package.

I'm also not a fan of only having five or six rounds and taking forever to reload. I've also seen some of these lightweight revolvers malfunction. Because they're so light rate and the recoil so hellacious I've seen rounds work them selves out of the casing just enough to where prevents the cylinder from rotating. Mostl notably in the 642/442 and lcr with Hornady critical duty/defense.

On average in the state, response time to a violent crime in progress is somewhere around 17 minutes. No one is coming to save you is the harsh reality. I'd rather have more capacity than a revolver offers.

tactical shotgun

1.)Remington 870 Express youth model 20 Gauge with 00 Buck for a long gun.
I prefer the lighter recoil that result in quicker follow up shots and a 20 gauge youth model is considerably easier to handle in a hallway or around corners yet still gives you that secure shoulder contact to absord recoil rather than the ridiculous pistol grip shotguns with no stock that nearly blow your wrist off of your arm when you shoot.

2.)Any reputable full sized polymer 9mm for sidearm IF carrying or vehicle use will never be needed. Glock, M&P, Walther, SA, H&K, Sig, Ruger.

With all that being said, I want my AR and 30 rounds of .223

Rem 870 12 Ga. You can shoot skeet, hunt birds, Deer hunt, Shoot the shite out of stuff, and use as home defense. Lots of options to go with this firearm if you choose to do so

Glock 19. 16 rds of 9mm in a smaller package than the 870.

I would go with both but its up to you

I have been involved in conversations with coworkers regarding home defense weapons and most agree that a shotgun is the weapon of choice. It was pointed out that 00 Buck can be an issue when used for home defense because a shot that misses its intended target could go through a sheetrock wall and kill or injure an innocent person.

What is the OB's opinion on this?

My primary has always been a Mossberg 500 with a Glock 19 as secondary. The 500 is loaded with 00 and the 19 with a defense round.

Nearly any bullet will go through 6+ walls of sheetrock.

When considering the frangible characteristics of a 5.56 round and what it was designed to do (break apart on impact) a strong case can be made for an AR15 as a great home defense weapon, especiall if you live in a rural area.

I just converted my old wingmaster to a home defense shotgun. Magpul fore end, 18" barrel, +2 mag extender, side saddle for 6 shells on the receiver.

I keep it loaded with #6. I wouldn't have a shot over 15 feet in my house and if an intruder was behind a door I have no doubt I could still frick them up.

Any short barreled, dependable shotgun loaded with #7 1/2 or #8 lead bird shot. Don't worry, at close range that load will do the job and then some. More controllable from the standpoint of safety to others in the home. Better from a self-defense angle too if for some strange reason you wind up in court. Mine is a Remington 1100, 26 inch Improved Cylinder, 5 shots with plug removed. Be sure to clean and oil it from time to time.

Just watched a video on this and the guys tested 71/2 shot all the way to 00buck and the best they found as far as colladeral damage and wall penetration was a #6.

Also if you go the shotgun route only for home defense just get a youth model 20 gauge.

Why? Sure, it gives you much more capacity, but you don't have near the stopping power with an AR over a 12 gauge shooting buck shot. If I shoot someone center mass with an AR from close range, I'm likely going to get a pass through shot with little to no expansion. If I shoot someone center mass from close range with 12 gauge buck shot, they are going down and not getting up.

I understand the comfort of having 30 rounds, but the practicality is not there. At most there might be 3 or 4 guys, and your chances of encountering and Having to shoot it out with all of them are extremely small.

+2. When my son outgrew the 20ga, it became a home defense gun. I usually have my Glock on me but the shotgun is backup.

My 1911 is my first grab but the shotgun is right there too. I've been considering getting one of those gun holding headboards for the bed. Cant shake the feeling that it's going to fall out and bust me in the head at night though.
