My father in law was vacationing on the gulf one year and got on the elevator with a man and his son. The boy was holding a catfish against his belly. The dad said the little boys brother picked the fish up and threw it at his brother and the fin went all the way into his stomach. He was afraid to pull it out because he thought it was barbed on the end.

I've eaten them on purpose.

They don't taste bad at all, problem is you barely get any meat off of them. Their yield is less than a sheephead.

I was fishing with a guy who fixed my car and he took every hardheaded we caught. Thought he'd won the damn jackpot. Not much else biting that day so I sent him home with a cooler full. I throw those back because they are scrawny. Blue cats are delicious but hard heads are just all head and no filet.

I tried them twice, first time I cleaned them while alive and fillet them off the bone and they tasted great, second time was on the bone and they were horrible and stunk up the whole camp.

something in the bones of them suckers is tainted in the worst way.

FYI - sail cats/gafftops are good eating catfish if fillet off the bone but they need to be 24" long to get a 10-12" fillet from them. that's because you only get meat from the center horn to tail section. I generally wont keep them unless im having a really bad day fishing because they are slimey as hell and will fill your box with snot

Thanks to the thread for all of the good information and stories! I threw the hardhead back (about 3 pounds), caught 3 more small ones, and finally caught a red on that day. The fishing spot is in the backyard, where a brackish canal runs through. It's an inlet of the Atlantic. You normally catch about 5 hardheads before another good fish is caught.

Came across this thread during a search. I've never eaten one but they are certainly dangerous. I don't like them.

I've done hard heads once. The meat was fine, but they yield so little it's not worth it.

I think the biggest thing with the undesirables is to eat them fresh and only fresh. Don't even save it if there's left overs. Once cooled, the contraction of the liquid intensifies the fishiness.

I had a guy that swore gafftops were bad. I threw some filets in with the specks and he couldn't pick them out.

I've even fried spade fish and Bermuda Chub and other than the off putting color the fish was fine.

Caught at least ten tiny ones at west cove on small jigs. Foul hooked for the most part because they were so small.

Ive done gaff tops a few times and its very important to cut out the bloodline. I wold think hardheads would leave no meat by the time you do that.

The bloodline is like eating I dont know, rotten sardines out of someones arse or something like that.

Not saying it wasn't a hard head, but any idea what the determining factor was that your friend used?

Yes, you can clean them. Yes, you can eat them. However, it seems the head is longer than freshwater cats so you get very little as compared to the same size fresh water cat.

With that said, not worth cleaning or eating in my opinion.
