I caught a catfish in brackish water and someone told me it was a hardhead. Anybody have experience cleaning one of these and are they edible?

I saw a family keeping them at GI this summer. They spoke English and were capable of sunburn.

My old man ate one on accident once. Said it tasted like hell.

A friend got stuck by one a couple weeks ago. The barb went through his finger. He had to go to urgent care to get it out.

If one has to resort to eating those things, either you or your fishery really sucks.

Me and my buddies will get drunk at the camp In pac and throw a line off the top deck into the marina more or less. Biggest hardheaded I've ever seen. All 18-20". I thought about filleting one for shits and giggles.

i don't see how they are any more difficult to clean than a freshwater catfish.
on that note -
they are not as clean tasting as flat heads or channels but significantly cleaner tasting than 25lb plus blues... I have caught them and blues in the same water small ones taste the same....(small under 5lb).
I am a certified sun burn capable humanoid
I am a drown proof swimmer

many years ago at a camp in myrtle grove I saw some one filet a mess of hardheads and blues and channels (the blues and channels were from ms river that day) hard heads were from lake laurier and bay round.... fried them all together - not one person knew.... the chef.. and yes he was a top notch chef at one of new orleans' most widely known dining establishments singled out two diners in particular to let them know about half the catfish they ate were indeed hard heads.....
but then again I eat choupique(which does require special handling from hook to belly)fried, baked, broiled, boiled and in sushi and sashimi.

I hate catching them small mfers. One got me thru the fingernail one afternoon. Had to get drunk for the pain to subside.

Dude it's all perception and keeping up appearances. Talk a good game with no regard for the truth.
The dude who said his dad ate one and said it tasted like hell is a great example . If it tasted nasty then likely everything else did too.
I agree with your post from top to bottom.
Me and a buddy brought some stingrays and hardheads back to the doc along with an ice chest full of specks once upon a time . Just to experiment and see for ourselves. The dirty looks we got were comical.

I have kept and eaten stingrays. Stupid easy to clean and the small ones taste pretty good. I did clean one hard head before and found then meat to have a yellow tint. Didn't eat though I would be open to trying it though

Nah. Hes been catching and eating fish his whole life.
It was fried whole with some whole fried blue cats. Very easy to tell which one it was and consensus was it tasted like shite.
