Elmer's is still privately owned, he State is just usurping a right of way to the public beach. The Elmer family wants $7 million for it, which is too much.

I spent many a day in the Elmer's surf as a kid, and Fourchon. Caught alot of fish on shad rigs. Fun times. Isn't it funny how we have so many different lures now, when those worked just great?

It pisses me off that fourchon beach is now closed to the public.

Nice story Couyon.

Is Fourchon actually closed, or is it just no vehicle access?

And I thought the state failed to buy Elmer's from the Elmer family, but then "discovered" that most of the beach is actually state owned anyway.

I am way behind on the Elmers situation. It pisses me off they won't pay for it then act like they own it.

To Mong:
I talk about shad rigs now and guys say WTF?
Question: How does an East wind affect Elmers/GI? i checked the 10 day forecast and it's calling for 8-12 East winds weekend after this one. Rain 30%

East wind kicked our a$$ this past Saturday! Sunday was more SE but still very rough. We caught some big trout from the boat but had the occasional wave crashing into the boat and you couldn't stand up w/o leaning on something or holding on. We brought the boat back to the camp and tried the surf from Elmer's but too much chocolate milk in the water. In the boat all our strikes were where the cleaner water started.

We fished caroling rigged live shrimp and gulp shrimp (new penny) and saw no difference in the bite. I won't buy live shrimp next time!

Thanks, Wilson.
I'm trying to decide when to go.
Haven't been in a long while, but some of the last trips were screwed up by the rough surf. I was hoping the east winds wouldn't hurt too bad, but:

" wind out de east, de fish bite de least!"

Fourchon: Company that owned land up to beach closed access to vehicular traffic. You can still walk out there and fish, just can't drive your truck miles down the beach to get away from the crowds like we used to do.

The public owns the beach, which is defined as the portion of land covered by the highest tide during the winter season. Basically the entire beach. So when the sale negotiations with the Elmer family broke down, the State's ace legal team declared Elmer's open, as a route to public property. I am not sure how parking, fishing and crabbing is allowed all over the property beyond the beach, but the Elmers seem not to have fought back.

I was told by a fella patrolling the fourchon beach, you cannot walk on land over there.

can't remember what company owns that(Calliouette maybe?), but they probably gave enough money to Jindal that he won't sling any eminent domain on them like he did the Elmers. The beach will always be public, just a question of how easily you can access it. You can always boat there.

I read a little about this the other day, and there was some long thread on La Sportsman about it. From what I gathered, the Wisner trust owns the land between Elmer's and the end of Fourchon road and the Callioutte the land to the west of there.

Does anyoe know the reason they keep people off the beaches there?

The image i got from your post was Barney Fife runnung up and down the beach trying to figure out how to run you off after you waded in. Blowing his whistle and sh!t!
Barney on his phone to Andy, " Nip it Nip it nip it!! We have to NIP IT IN DA BUD!"

The land surrounding the beach is private, and people that go fish/hang out on the beach completely trash it up. Then if they injure themselves, they sue the landowner. A-holes ruin it for everyone.
