Going fishing offshore

Going on my first offshore fishing trip in a couple weeks. Got a couple questions.
1) I have a 10 yo son and I really would like to take him. Bad idea?
2) if I do take my son, what's the best practice to avoid seasickness?
3) what are the major does and don'ts?
4) any other tips greatly appreciated
TIA
ETA:Hopefully no red tides will be encountered

How far out?
What size boat?
How long of a trip?

Take dramamine the night before so you wont get seasick. Get some scopalomine patches to help w that too. Put that on night before. Dont get trashed the night before. Besides that, its not bad lol. Biggest thing is preventing seasickness.

Not a bad idea
Take the dramaline
Don't get on the boat with a empty stomach or be hungover.
Eat a good supper the night before and a healthy breakfast before hand
Wear plenty of sunscreen and wear crocs

1. What kind of offshore trip are we talking, snapper day trip or overnighter tuna trip? I don't see a problem with a 10 year old on a day trip
2. Take Bonine for sea sickness as soon as you wake up the morning of
3. Major do's and don'ts:
Listen to your captain, no spray sunscreen, no bananas, have a good time

does he have to go with you on both days? Take him on the Snapper trip for sure...however 10 years old as long as he wants to go and understands that it's going to be a long day and the boat isnt going to turn around just because he gets sick or tired.

I am a neophyte at offshore but I just got back after a great trip this weekend.
I was worried about seasickness and did all the stuff I could think of too prevent it.
I super hydrated the day before and day of.
I carb loaded the day before.
I took B6
I took meclizine (Dramamine)
I avoided alcohol prior to departure and during ride out
I chewed ginger gum
I even took Zofran (a prescribed antiemetic)
I still got sick briefly. I then put on a scopolamine patch, caught a tuna, and drank a beer and I felt much better.
Bring sunscreen but not spray on and put it on prior to getting on the boat if leaving for day trip. Reapply every 2-3 hours.
Bring a hat that covers your neck and ears.
Bring clear zinc oxide for face and ears.
Consider light long sleeve shirt
(offshore fishing is not the time to work on your tan)
Bring good shades, shade keeper strings with a float, and pre-moistened lens cleaner wipes
you don't want to wipe lenses with salt crystals
Bring plain saltine crackers, dry bread, ginger snaps. Non greasy foods are easier on the gut when/if you get sick.
Bring Gatorade or similar sports drink and plenty of water
Bring boat shoes with some sort of heel strap, I had sandals without a heel strap and maneuvering with a fish on the line was difficult when my sandals would come off
Bring frog toggs or other packable rain gear as the ocean spray off the boat will get you drenched going in and out.
Keep you Dramamine, ginger gum, Zofran, or other anti nausea med in your pocket. Having look down in boat to search for those in your bag will not make you feel better.
Bring a disposable camera for the little guy. It will help fill the down time and keep him entertained.
DO NOT
use spray sunscreen
bring banana
grab braided line with bare hand when a fish is on

Great info here.
I have my first offshore trip coming up in July. 8 hour out of Mexico Beach, FL.
I don't think I get seasick. I've been out in big waves off Hawaii before. I'll medicate up just in case.

Spray sunscreen gets all over everything and makes it slick as whale snot

Spray sunscreen can ruin polycarbonate lenses like on sunglasses, and expensive electronics. It also can make the deck/boat slippery or sticky depending on the brand and make it more difficult to clean up. Some brands can reportedly alter the wax or gel coat causing a white boat to look yellow.

and blood, fish slime and chum doesnt?

Will kill all live bait in live well.

It stained one of my cushions on my boat. It's also a giant waste of money since most of it ends up in the wind instead of your body. Be a bro and rub some lotion on ur bros back.

Sure it does, but all of those are biologics that dissolve and wash off with saltwater spray down (excluding nasty gafftops of course).
Sunscreen is designed to stay on when wet and when sweating (salt water).

For the love of all good, do not look down and focus on anything for more than a few seconds.
That's where you end up getting sick.
For me it's retying a hook. I have learned to tie a hook while looking away.

Lol it's obvious who's you were fishing with this weekend BP.
Spray sunscreen turns the boat orange.
Also don't wear sperrys. The color will seep out and can stain boat deck

Bunch of vaginas in here with sea sickness.
Agree with the sunscreen, don't agree with the bananas that's superstitious bs. To not cause a hastle is usually eat on the dock before going out.
