I use a Craftsman 6.5 hp push mower and it works perfectly. It was around that price and it has been great for years. I treat it like, well a lawn mower (shite) and it always starts and runs great.

I have a cheap arse bolens from Lowes. I do not recommend them. I had to return the first one within the first 2 weeks. This one doesn't run right.
It doesn't have adjustable wheels, or throttle. It is also hard to start, 10-12 pulls.
My advice is to pass on the super cheap, even though you only use it 4 months out of the year. When it doesn't work well, it may as well not work at all.

Make a pass through your neighborhood a few times a week and try and grab one off the side of the road. If it doesn't run with a simple carb job (unlikely it will not run) then throw one of those $90 harbor freight honda clones on it.

They'll also negotiate with you. They really don't care about margin.

Nope, you will be buying another within 2 years. Get a Honda the first time. Buy once, Cry once.

Lowes has a Troy-Bilt 140cc briggs & stratton for $200. Sears has a Craftsman for $190 and Sutherlands has a Poulan Pro for $180 I was looking at

Had a Murray that I bought from the "retruned" section at Home Depot....$119 (front wheel drive). It ran for 12 years and I swera I never pulled the cord more than twice before it started. Finally crapped out. Figured it had served its time and retired it, but I still have it just to tinker with to see if I can get it to run again one day.

I've had my Troy-Bilt push mower for over 8 years now and it still gets the job done. Of course it's only used for a very small section of the yard that my zero turn can't get into because it's too narrow. I guess it depends on what kind of use you're hoping to get out of it.

I had one with a Honda motor on it that we bought at Sears when we bought the house 8 years ago. It lasted about 6 years. It was a nice housewarming present from my mother in law. Self-propelled and all that. When it crapped out on me a couple of years ago, I just bought a push mower. I don't even know the name of it. It has a dark green deck and was under $200 at Lowe's. Starts right up every time. I get a little more workout now cutting grass since it isn't self-propelled and we have some slope to our yard, but it works just fine. I figure if I get 5 or more years out of it, I'm good.

I picked up the Troy-bilt from Lowes last year, and it has run good so far.

Craigslist. I found a guy in my area who is retired and basically rebuilds old mowers as a hobby/income. Got one of the B&S Troy Bilt's that was totally clean and rebuilt for under $100 from him. He'll also buy old non working mowers from you. Might be someone similar in your area.

I think they are decent little engines. I was talking with a guy not long ago that raced go karts. He told me they were pretty hard on engines, (as racing them would be)replacing B&S engines got to be costly, so they switched over to the Harbor Freight engines and have had great service from them.

I've had mine almost that long. It starts up easy, no problems. My lawn isn't much over 1,000 ft2, but still, it's been a very good machine.
