Does it ever bug any of you when you see someone make an identification that is clearly wrong?

I see it with birds all the time. Someone asks for an ID, and a person responds with something that is clearly wrong. I don't get it.

I just mind my business and keep moving along. No need to get my blood pressure up over something meaningless

It annoys me on snake ID's. They're given the correct answer and a bunch of other folks chime in with wild guesses that do nothing but add confusion.

Not really. People are gonna do what they're gonna do. If someone asks me to identify a snake or a bug or a fish I do my best but I certainly am not gonna get myself worked up over whether they believe me or not, and hell I've been wrong before. I wouldn't take it so personally if I was you.

It's not something I get worked up over. It's something that bothers me. As a professional, I don't stick my neck out there on something if I'm not certain of what I'm telling someone. Sometimes you make a mistake, but an obviously wrong ID bugs me.

It's more of an education thing to me I guess.

^^^This.
There are only a handful of snakes commonly encountered. I can understand if someone inexperienced can't tell the difference between a Banded water snake and a Broad-banded water snake. But distinguishing a Cottonmouth from any type of water snake is a pretty simple identification. And no one should be allowed on an outdoor forum if they can't id a Rat snake, King snake, Racer , or Garter snake.

And then you have people calling the same plant two different names, and both being correct for their area. Its really confusing...that is why us taxonomic botanist are in such high demand (cough).

But misidentifications doesn't get under my skin, except when people kill harmless snakes (like king snakes).

Locust or Cicada?

It is pretty amazing to see how many people call every water snake with a pattern a moccasin.

I get more frustrated with recommendations for weed control products by trade name. There's 10 different brands of glyphosate recommended in those threads with everyone swearing it's the best.

That one is tricky. I mean, yeah, it's not really a locust, but sorta like "Pin Oak", which we don't have BTW, it has stuck beyond changing. It's not like people are misidentifying the little guys as locusts, they are just using another name.

BTW, what's a mosquito hawk?
