The small ones seem to be very good. I'm not familiar with the big ones.

I was about 2 hours from buying a shearwater and the guy got cold feet at the last minute and decided to keep the boat.

Would that Shearwater happen to have been white with a F300 hung on the back?

If I were buying a new motor for my rig id go etec or opti. Just personal preference tho. Yamahas are great motors too but they aren't the end all be all like everyone treats them.

When the high majority of shrimpers and crabbers have Yamahas on the back of their boats, that's all the convincing I need.

My ex-gf's dad had a 60 Etec on an aluminum hull. During a summer I put 400 hours on it, with no problems other than over tightening the oil tank cap and cracking it.

The next boat he had was a 23' Gulf Coast with a 225 HO Etec, put 1500 hours on it in a year and a half with no problems.

Then we broke up, I miss fishing

ETA: The 60 got about 4mpg running wide open all the time, the 225 got about 2.5 running it mostly wide open.

It's probably a great motor if you don't fish when it's below 42 degrees. If you do I hope you've got a good trolling motor...

I've only ever had a yamaha and it has been great. 25 tiller handle.

With that said, I would look at the Suzuki's. My buddy has 70 on a 17' express and it runs like a spotted assed ape. Not to mention, it's the quietest motor I've ever been around.

I've got a 2007 60hp Etec on a 18' flats skiff. Love it.
