Do Foxes Pose Any Harm to People or Pets

Question for the OB regulars. We have a fox that has taken up in our neighborhood, some of the neighbors with small children have complained about it. As a result animal control has been trying catch it. They say it seems like it's a female that has had pups in the woods nearby and she's just trying to find food and tend to them.
My question is do foxes pose any real harm to humans or pets? I understand the parents being scared for their small children but is this thing really something to worry about? I say leave it be but now animal control has put out traps for it in my yard. Never mind the fact that they never asked for permission to do so. One trap is a baited cage, the other is a leg trap. The fact that they put the traps out is annoying because now we can't let the cats outside until they catch the stupid thing.
My opinion is that they're overreacting and that once the pups get big enough the fox will probably get out of the neighborhood. That being said I have no experience with the things so I thought I'd get the OB's thoughts.

foxes are pretty much harmless.
They are in many suburban neighborhoods and people dont even know it.
just enjoy it if you can see it, they are cool

I wouldn't think they would pose a problem.

Probably not. There was one in my parents old neighborhood about 5 years ago and they warned everyone about their kids and pets. Dad said every time he walked out back to let the dog out, if the fox was there he'd scamper off into the trees.
And since this is the OB, nb4dajudge

You are one of those that let's your cats roam the neighborhood tearing into people's trash, walking on everyone's vehicles, shitting in their flower beds, clawing up their window screens?

Foxes will pose a threat to small pets, chihuahas and cats mostly. Children ought to be safe.

I've got them in my backyard and there are no problems unless you are a rabbit or a chicken.

I don't think they harm anything except rodents and bugs and shite like that.
And they're cool to watch.
We see them almost every weekend during deer season at the camp in Simsboro.

We had a brood get born last year. It was fun to watch the pups play out in the pasture. MowMow said she'd kick my arse if I tried to trap it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Well nothing I can do now that the city is involved. Here's to hoping she's wiley enough not to get caught. Or if she does she just gets caught in the cage and gets relocated. Feel bad for the pups though.

From my experience, even well trained trappers have a hard time catching foxes. I've been trapping for 10 years and have yet to catch more than a few. You've really gotta know what you're doing and have the right kinda luck.

I'd think a fox is slightly more dangerous than all the nonvenomous snakes people seem to kill around here. if they eat cats that would be a bonus.

Never heard of foxes killing anything very big.
As for the traps i would remove them from my yard

I have scratches on the tailgate of my truck from a cat trying to climb it...it is now a dead cat, or one of his friends anyway. Either way, he got the message.

As stated they can and will attack cats and small dogs.
They will avoid humans unless rabid.
They can be a carrier of rabies but it is far less common than bats, skunks, or racoons.
For the most part if you see a wild animal in an uncommon setting like roaming around during mid day for a mostly nocturnal animal or standing its ground or approaching humans when they could easily go the other way you should assume they are injured or infected.
My opinion is any carnivore that loses the fear of humans is dispatchable.

Saw a red fox on the golf course last Thursday. One of the most playful animals I have ever seen. Just ran across the fairway tossing something up in the air to himself. Pretty cool.
