so i read that deer mostly just bed down in high winds because they can't hear or smell anything. in your experience, is this true? how windy does it need to get before deer start doing this?

I've killed a couple of deer,(one while bow hunting) in some decent winds.
But normally I don't see much.

January of 1999 in Gloster Ms...My dad and I were hunting on the Sunday after new years.I dont think it got out of the high 30's that day and the wind was probably blowing 20-25 all day.We hunted that morning and didnt see anything. We were gonna head home but he suggested that we still hunt instead of getting in a stand. We werent 200 yds into the woods when a doe stood up.She was laying there with 2 other does and a nice buck. The buck stood up and my dad put him down with a cpl shots. It ended up being his biggest deer ever and was a nice 9 pt with a large body.
We likley would have never seen that deer in the stand.Sometimes in windy or adverse weather sonditions you need to change it up a bit.Good memories of dad right there.

In before TL/DR

That's what they call it here even though that is completely nonsensical.

I also think they bed down when the wind picks up over about 20mph. If your main defenses were taken out you wouldn't want to do too much either. As Pdubya mentioned, stalking can be another option.

Hard hunting in the wind or rain. That said, you are guaranteed not to see any deer sitting at home.

i saw some research done on this with collared deer in texas. they had the movement of bucks graphed. without drawing the graph for you, think of good movement with less than 5mph. diminished movement going to almost zero as the wind increases. then a big spike in movement when the wind really got humping, like 40ish. They said is was like they hunkered down with the moderately heavy winds but when the wind was really blowing it freaked them out and they all were up and moving.

that being said, you hardly ever have winds that high that aren't really bad weather to be out in. I haven't had any luck with 15 to 30 mph and I haven't been able to hunt in a 40 mph wind to see if they really start moving.

Places I don't want to be when the wind is blowing 40 mph:

1. Any stand I had a part in building.

2. Any stand attached to a tree.

3. Under any tree.

During rut I will hunt high winds, other than that the odds wont be good. Not going to wear out a stand by hunting on windy days. I dont like to be in a tree swaying 3 ft each way from heavy wind.

I've had does under my stand in open marsh when the the wind was blowing so hard, I literally couldn't shoot because my stand was swaying so much. Then again, I've seen the flip side also.
