Is it necessary to get past the sand bar and into the second trough for either? I've caught crabs before the sand bar but didn't know if f it was more productive if I went past it. Seems like fishing would be better past it.

right before/at sunrise you shouldn't even be in the water except you toes maybe.

Fish are inbetween beach and 1st bar early.

As the sun comes up then yes, they will be in the next trough out.

Not sure about crabs, but the fish are in the first trough early in the morning. A lot of people screw up and stand right on top the fish in the morning.

Read this, I found it to be pretty accurate. LINK

People fish way too far out. Stand right where the surf washes up

I don't get into the water until the sun comes up how far I go depends on where I'm at on the island. If I'm fishing the 2nd half of the island and it's a busy weekend I'm walking strait out to my spot to beat the boats. If I'm fishing the 1st half I'm going to the first sand bar and walking that while making cast on both sides.

I've always got crabs in the first trough never needed to go any further.

You'd be amazed how close you could catch fish in proximity to the beach.

But as previously stated, they do tend to move further out as the day goes on.

As far as crabbing, just far enough out that getting another beer isn't a chore.

I've seen large trout in less than knee deep water at night on that beach.

As a side note, I BIL's mom lives on the island - she caught 60lbs of shrimp with a cast net standing in knee deep water last weekend.

Wow. How long did that take her? I would just like to be able to catch my bait for the day.

Waist deep water at the most for crabs but if it's rough you need a hammer and a piece of rebar to keep the trap from continually washing back on shore.

Thanks for all the replies. Surprises me about the trout being so close to shore. Hope to try that out soon.

I normally wade out then cast back onto the beach then drag it into the first trough first thing in the morning. I'll normally fish in a 360 degree circle till I find the fish.

It's a fun and different way to fish compared to out of a boat. We started doing it a couple years ago. Now every summer we rent a camp on the beach in Grand Isle with about 10 of us. It's a blast. May and June is usually when they are the thickest. You can still catch in July too.

I've never done it but plan on it this year. Is early may (like now) good or should I wait until later in the month?

And also will I be good with top water baits or is live shrimp a necessity?

Usually more toward late May, but with the lack of Winter this year who knows.

Live shrimp won't hurt obviously, but you can get by with plastics most of the time.

Plan your trip around the weather. If the wind is blowing out the south, don't go.

Calm, first thing at daylight, top water action is outstanding.

Crabs in the surf, no thanks. No mater how much you wash them, you will be still eating a shite load of sand. Tried them way to many times and can't stand that grit.

I will be down there the last weekend of May. What are some go to baits I need to fish in the surf. That weekend is the island long garage sale and my wife and mom will be rodaying while me and the kids will be on the beach drinking and marinating in the sun.

I have nothing to add other than this is true and awesome when you find it. Never had trout hitting top water on every cast before, if one would swirl and miss another would be right behind it. It'll ruin you.
