Tired of sliding down trees due to wet shoes, ice, barking falling off etc. Some of the guys at camp, the serious bow hunters, have bought r getting, spiked climbing kits for their boots, we use to call them lineman shoes etc. Basically, a spike hell etc u put over your shoes. Where do u get this and what is the downside? aka why are we not all using these?

1. I think they are illegal on public land
2. They are not very comfortable to wear to walk to your stand
3. They are not easy for "everyone" to use... you need to be in reasonably good shape to use them efficiently and safely.

I think they are a great option for someone that practices with them and learns how to use them properly. They just aren't as safe as a climbing stick.

You're gonna be sweating like a son of a bitch when you finally get up in the tree.

This is what I'm wondering.

I don't think spikes are a great option for daily hunting. For one thing, your tree will be dead if you hunt out of it a lot. They're not especially safe either. Just get some sticks or screw in steps. Or a climbing stand.

Buddy's dad was a lineman and could climb like a cat squirrel.

He would build his stands with no ladder and shimmy up the tree using those spikes.

Needless to say no one ever hunted his stands

When I used to deer hunt, I would use them with a lock on stand. You need the longer spikes for trees and not the shorter spikes for telephone poles. It takes some skill to get the hang of it. When I was younger I would strap them to my lock on, walk input my bow on the ground, attach a rope. Climb the tree with the stand hanging from my side and then hand it. I could hand a stand in any tree in less than 10 minutes. They are banned on state and federal lands.

Never used them on a real tree, but they are fun as hell on a prepared pole.

That looks like something that would be worn in a human version of a cock fight. If I was required to use that to get my stand up a tree, you'd come across me hunting a lock on 3 feet off the ground

I'm not following you either. I thought you were talking about Spurs too. Why would you wear spiked shoes in a climbing stand? If you're saying you're worried about the stand slipping because the built in spikes are too dull to dig into the tree, sharpen them with a grinder. The spikes on the new summit climbers are terrible, they're not even spikes. They're squared off where they meet the tree so you have to sharpen them. Take a grinder and grind on the top and bottom of each spike a little at a time until they are sharp enough to dig into the tree. And buy a hss harness in case the stand slips while you're sitting in it.

But, you're asking about shoes? How the hell are you using your stand?

I'm sure what you're saying makes sense, but I'm just not following.

Same here. When I use my climber my feet stay on the bottom platform.

The stand does all the biting into the tree, I don't see how spikes or spiked shoes could help you at all.

Unless of course we are all misunderstanding your intended use.

Yeah i'm not sure i'm following either so I'll recommend that you get some strap on crampons like these, shoot video, and post the results here.

tighten the stand

or do you have an old stand with the metal grips? those were awful about sliding down trees, but with the new stands, I never have this issue
