Instead of starting another thread I'll post mine here... I know nothing about snakes, so he may be harmless. Was pulling weeds under the gutter drainage and grabbed a handful of grass and this guy. Was about 5-6 inches and had the girth of a pencil, so just a baby I guess.

Dekay's brown snake. Eats bugs and seems to like St Aug grass.

I had a guy knock down a tree in my yard a few years ago and there was one where the roots came up. I grabbed it and he freaked out. "That's a ground rattler! That'll kill you!"

I usually heard it from older folks in my area. My theory is that those old people were around when pygmy rattlers were more common up here. I know dekay's don't look a LOT like them, but there's some superficial resemblance, and you know how good the general public is at snake I.D.

Rat snake, better than six cats. I have a six footer living in the attic. He travels through the trees. i know when he is out because the blue jays have a fit. He comes on the porch to get water. Cool Huh!
