Thinking about building a wooden deck in the backyard but I don't have gutters installed on the backside of the house. Will I have a problem with the boards being warped or damaged from water falling from the roof directly onto the deck?

You can install a rain diverter on the roof directly above the deck.

why not just install gutters?

Most likely will either install gutters or a diverter. Just seeing what my options are.

No, don't believe the hype. They suck. Mine looks like crap, and one day I'm going to pull all the boards up and replace with wood.

I don't think that will have any effect whether the boards warp or not. Some are going to warp no matter what... If you space your joists at 16" and screw the deck boards down properly, you can minimize it.

Granted I'm in OKC and we don't get as much rain as LA, but I have a deck out my back door and no gutters and there is no discernible warping on the drip line.

This is what I did on my last house. A good sealer on boards will help also.

I built a 20x20 with treated pine piers, joist, and deck boards. I did this, uhhh, about 1.5 years ago and still haven't decided on what to do as a cover. I haven't had any twist, turns, peels, or anything else. Looks as good as the day I put it down.

Has anyone here used the concrete pier blocks for their deck?

If the sun is on it it'll warp no matter what. Rain won't really matter as long you use treated wood.

In my experience, if you have a deck without a roof over it, you don't have much.

I built one at my last house for the rear and tore it up three years later, then placed a slab with a roof extension. My current house has a deck n the back that will be removed soon.

I have a 12'x21' all wood deck i built on the back of my house. 12' of the 21' is covered, the other 9' isnt covered and i dont have gutters. So far no problems, but ive just recently added the 9' uncovered, so i guess time will tell.

timely thread. Building a covered patio on my mobile home as we speak. Going with treated 16' 4x6's as my beams concreted in the ground. Was going to go with blocks but a contractor buddy of mine did not like that idea.

note: Do not attempt to stain /paint or seal any treated lumber until it's completely dried out. This can take up to 8 months. Take a small piece of aluminum foil, tape it down with scotch tape, check every week for moisture on the foil. Once you can lift it up and there is no moisture then you can do whatever you want to the wood.
