I think the idea that most people will head to the country isn’t accurate.

Have to remember how dependent so many people are on the govt. They will head toward the city looking for food, medicine and supplies. They will expect distribution stations where the guard is handing out MREs and such.

I witnessed this after Katrina and Rita. Working the areas south of Prarieville all the way to St Bernard I saw a lot of people dependent on govt

When I was near Dequincy after Rita entire communities worked together. An 18wheeler full of water and MREs showed up at a truck stop in Starks and not one person got in line for handouts but everyone went to work to hand out items.

Just something to keep in mind. Not everyone will turn into highway robbers, murdered and rapist in just a few days

Yup. Most people are only as good as the world they live in. Folks will go feral

There will be roving gangs of cannibals. Eventually there will be nothing but cannibals left, and their gangs will form territorial communities that interact with other groups just like chimpanzee groups do. Brutal strength will be the greatest currency, followed by the machiavellian ability to form a consensus within groups of random humans.

I’m starting to accumulate books and supplies to pressure can meats etc. hoping to have a rocket stove and wilood fired smoke house up and running sometime this year. Recently got some water purification equipment

That's a good start.

Learn to use that pressure canner. Know wnat you can do with it and it's limitations. How many jars you have and then how many rings and lids you have. Does it require replacement gaskets?

What kind lf water purification "equipment?"

Rocket Stoves are great, I've got a lot of them laying around that I've had for years, decades some of them. My favorite is probably my Kelly Kettle. There's a Chinese knockoff out there now for about a third of the price.

Picked up the hanging bag style with valve filter on a tube below. Supposed to be good for 5000 L but I also picked up 4 more replacement cartridges. Already have rain catchment cistern and my land has a live creek that didn’t go dry even in this drought. If I didn’t have kids to put through school I would already be homesteading out there. I plan to put together a seed bank as well

ETA: it just really depends on the threat. Emp or conventional bomb but we could also easily find ourselves in another Great Depression situation and I would rather not be dependent on the soup line.

I agree, if there is a government. If it’s a localized issue with a decent federal government absolutely people will stay.

But what if it’s a mass national issue where say DC gets hit by a virus or emp or nuke? The federal gov’t would fall apart temporarily and chaos would occur until it was pieced back together.

I’m by no means a doomsdayer, but Covid showed me truly how quick shite would hit the fan. I was very close to buying a .50bmg so I had something to stop most government vehicles. I had to walk back from the cliff for a bit. Still should have just pulled the trigger on the 50 just because.

Hell i have a good two tons of wild pork just on my place at the moment. At least two sounders of 10+. There may be more hogs than people in this county.

Forget about the seeds for now. Concentrate on beans and rice and spices. Lots of salts and sugar, pepper, GEL Season Salt, basil, oregano, etc.

Comcentrate on getting a dehydrator and a vaccum sealer and start jerking beef, buying canned chicken from Costco and Sam's. Figure 2000 calories per day per person minimum. 3500 is better but count wife, kids, parents, whomever, and figure minimum 2000 calories per day.

You can do five gallon buckets in mylar bags. Lots of videos on YouTube about doing it.

Also, go to YouTube and watch some videos ln how to make your own gravity water purification system using 5 gallon buckets or stainless pots from Walmart on the cheap. Go to Amazon and order a 4 pack of the ceramic domed filters with the activated charcoal packs inside. They work really well.

I've got a couple of Berkeys, a Royal and a Crown, but they're expensive and they're something you can get after you get your food stores, your first aid and your water issues fully covered.

You can never have too many waterproof bags, gallon baggies, 55 gal 10 mil lawn and garden trash bags, etc. You'll need them post shtf ... they'll serve a lot of purposes.

Make everything redundant .... five ways to have clean and pure drinking water. Five ways to start a fire. Five levels of security perimeter around your AO. Five types pf firearms and ammo .... a 12 gauge, a 22 LR pistol and rifle, an AR 15 and a 308. Those are the basics and there will be ammo for those. The 22 LR is lightweight. If you want 38/357 try to find a carbine to go with your pistol like a levergun of some sort .... Rossi, Henry, Marlin.

Remember, five ways to collect and purify water. Five ways, no less.

Steal a sail boat. Sail to a close in oil platform in the gulf with living quarters. Live off fish for 2 years ( not sure if medically possible). and pray there are no hurricanes.

I don’t have a real plan. God speed….

Oh no doubt allot of what you have mentioned I’m there just trying to fill in gaps. I’ve been stashing away vacuum sealed rice and beans since Covid. I’m really lacking in medicines and stuff like that. This isn’t a just starting out lightbulb moment for me. Real fortifications would be a dream but the wife may fly off the handle on that one haha….

I’m sitting better than the vast majority.

When All Hell Breaks Loose by Cody Lundin
This is a good book to have. It gives you intricate info, such as how much bleach to treat water. It sits near my guns and is a must have. I read the EMP books and they’re good. But this is more specific

Yeah, that's him. Barefoot Cody. 8.6 Degrees is the only one of his that I have. Have never been a huge fan of his.

I've got a prepper's library. Books are important. Lemme see if I can figure out how to upload a pic.

You should be able to blow that up and read some of the titles there on the second shelf in the picture.

Dare to Prepare is the seminal prepper's bible, along with the Fox Fire series.

You probably still have better odds than living in New Orleans or Chicago, or even the suburbs. What happens when 1m people get hungry and Rouse's hasn't opened in weeks? They go door-to-door with the guns that supposedly aren't allowed in big cities and take whatever food you can find. That's called anarchy, and they also take whatever else they want. Gold. Money. Women. It's like Berlin 1945 when the Russians showed up.

I'll take my chances in the woods before I try the Berlin 1945 thing.

That said the OP is correct, the pressure on local game is going to be a big deal. I just don't want to be the local game.
