Better lawn grass for S. LA than St. Augustine?

I'm sick of St. Aug. Grows too damn tall, needs too much sunlight, not great weed resistant, on and on.

Anybody else have experience with a different variety of lawn grass that looks nice and doesn't take too much time, effort and money to take care of?

I'm currently spending alot of time, money and effort to cover about 1/5 of my back yard with pavers and gravel to cover a muddy area where St. Aug won't grow to get rid of the mud.

I've never lived down there but would zoysia work? I have it here in TN and it's awesome. Thick enough that weeds won't grow and doesn't get really tall.

Centipede is nicknamed "the lazy man's grass" for a reason.

I thought at Aug was the best lawn for here. Everyone has told me it grows so thick weeds don't flow through it. I was planning on putting some down next year.

It is suddenly appearing in my backyard. I think it may now have more coverage than my St. Aug. I'm not mad.

How nicely do those two play together? Will one usually dominate?

I have centipeded, st. aug and some zoysa from the neighbor's yard. The sod worms ate the st. aug, crab grass and Bermuda, but didn't jack with centipede. Centipeded is decently drought tolerant, I can treat it with atrazine. I'm a st. aug guy, but the centipede is growing on me.

There is more than one type? I really have no clue about this stuff.

My main concern is weeds, beyond that, I don't care. Cutting grass doesn't take long. I just want something to keep weeds down and to hold up against the dog.

I say lay a variety and let the best grass win.

In my experience, if you cut it at the right height it will crowd out everything. Cut it too short and it can't do its thing. But it does need cutting once a week or more if you have good soil and plenty of rain.

This is what I am looking for. Read great things about different Zoysia varieties, but have not talked to anyone that has used them.
