Other subject got me thinking about what I should get my daughter for her first real gun, bolt action .17 or .22? I don't own a .17 so leaning towards that. Obviously .17 ammo is more expensive but I'm talking bolt action and I live in the city. Not going to be shooting 1000s of rounds.

All depends on what you're gonna be using it for. If it's your daughter and you are just planning on shooting cans and getting her comfortable with a gun I would say .22 but if you plan on her actually hunting with it then I would say spend the exta cash and go with the .17

I say .22 lr as i still haven't found a good enough reason to add a .17 to my collection.

Have you shot a .17? They are very loud compared to a .22. I think a .22 to start the quickly graduate to the .17 if she's interested...

Buy a CZ 455 and get both barrels. It is something she will be able to pass down. Quality is great.

Get her a cricket 22. Ammo is cheaper & easier to find and the 22 is much quieter than a 17

Agreed. The 22LR is the ultimate "plinker's gun." Plus, 17 ammo is a good bit more expensive than plinking 22LR ammo. You're not planning on shooting 1000's of rounds, but let me tell you now, when kids shoot a gun, THEY want to burn through some ammo. Get a 22LR and let HER enjoy herself shooting 1000's of rounds! I mean, the main thing is for her to have a safe and fun time, correct??

Then you have issues if you are looking for a reason. Just because is enough of a reason.

Well I have a .22 pistol and my dad has a browning .22 semi auto.

I basically went straight from Pump BB gun to .243 when I was too young looking back. I remember being really nervous for awhile. I'd like to get a bolt action with a scope for shooting cans at 50ish yards

Ruger 10/22. They are reasonably priced, they always function and ammo is cheap. There are a ton of "add ons" for them out there too. I bought my boys 10/22s with the understanding that they would never sell them. They love shooting them!

Definitely .22LR for a first rifle. I don't see any advantage in a .17 unless you're planning to get her into varmint hunting soon.

Since you're looking at bolt actions anyway, if YOU want a .17, do as someone else suggested and get the CZ 455. You can switch barrels between .22 and .17 easily.

Bought the boy a Ruger SS 10/22 for Christmas and he's put 850+ rounds thru it since. He loves it.

Some of the coating starting coming up around the bolt, which I'm not happy with and the magazines can be a temperamental, but it's a decent gun.

Even on the SS models, the reciever is still made of aluminum and painted. Its a common problem with all models of 10/22s.
