My cousin has a hi-point .40 that he has shot 1,000s of rounds through with no issues.

High Point is kinda like the Fat Girl/Moped scenario of guns makes..

They're not pretty, nothing to brag about, don't want you're friends to catch you with one, but god dammit they'll get the job done everytime!!!!

I bought a High Point 9MM years back from Spillway Sportsman, Scott the owner told me he had shot his thousands of times and it wouldn't jam. I was looking for something cheap for alligator hunting in case it went overboard it wouldn't be a big loss. 12 years later I still have it and it has never been cleaned and only jammed with CCI ratshot.

Haters gonna hate, but it was the best $150 I ever spent

And it's MADE IN THE GOOD OLD USA

Some people have been very nice but it could be to your detriment. Do not buy a hi point.

They're not as bad as many here will say. Ugly, heavy, cheap but utterly reliable and more accurate than most will admit. They are blow-back operated and the barrel is fixed to the frame which means very few actionable parts and barrel alignment never changes. There is a good series of YouTube videos that torture test a 9mm version.

I have a Hi-Point .380 and really enjoy it. They are better guns than their reputation, keep it cleaned and it will do fine for what you want. There are a lot of surprisingly good reviews on YouTube. As mentioned above they can be surprisingly accurate.

Only needed one shot from 15 yards or so to do this.

You obviously haven't seen my SR45 vs. M&P45 video. The Ruger had issues from the factory (fixed now) that I was honest about. I shoot M&Ps better anyway. That 9E is just a good deal.

Or you're just trolling me... You're a pro at that shite.

True.

But I'd still never buy one. "Not being as bad as they used to be" is hardly a glowing recommendation, especially when one can buy a used quality gun for not much more than a new Hi Pernt.

Second that. If it's about caliber (.40 S&W), shop around and get a good used pistol. Pretty sure I've seen Beretta 96's pop up a little under $300.

If it's about buying a new gun, I wouldn't dip below Bersa or Canik. Both are pretty nicely made, good reputations.

If you can accept a used 9mm for a "paperweight" as you put it, Palmetto has Beretta 92S for $259, J&G has Star Super B's for $249.
The Beretta has the heel release and comes with one 15 rd magazine, and the Star comes with two 8 rd mags. I love the Star that I got from J&G, and if I didn't already have a Beretta 92FS, I'd have scooped up one of the Berettas. Might still do it. Either of those would be a better gun than the Hi-Point, and not too much pricier.

And despite the snobs/haters, I love shooting my Hi-Point carbine.

The carbines are decent firearms. I think the large-size allowed with a rifle allows the action to work much smoother.

From the YouTube videos I've watched on hi point pistols, and this goes for any fun really, you better test out some ammo through the gun before betting your life on it.

You get what you pay for, and a hi point will repeatedly jam up with the wrong ammunition. It's not going to eat everything you try to feed it. Since it will be for defense I wouldn't even fool around with ball ammo. Fork out the coin you're saving on a nice gun and get a few different boxes of JHP ammunition.

My advice would be to get a different brand of gun. Unless you feel your life is in immediate danger go ahead and save up for something with a better reputation for reliability than a hi point. Taurus, Ruger, Kahr, Glock, S&W are all better options

I actually have that Taurus G2 for a truck gun, and have well over 1000 rds with no misfires. It's quite snappy, but always goes bang.
