I'm looking for a handgun for the house and any other situation that might come up.

I'm not looking to spend a ton, as it'll be a paper weight more than anything.

I don't have experience with guns, so I'm not sure how effective a .40 caliber is, but it's a nice price.

They go bank when you pull the trigger, not accurate but fine for a cheap gun. I would probably look at a 9 over 40, but that would really start a fight...

If that's what you can afford or want to spend on a pistol, go for it. But they do have much better guns out there on the market.

Yeah, I've been looking at 1911s too, but for something I don't intend on using much, if any, I'd like to keep the price as low as is reliable.

entry level gun...not the best, but if you aren't going to shoot a whole lot, it is more than adequate...

as far as caliber....40 is pretty large, but would certainly kill any coon, possum, or robber that should make a nuisance of himself...

Do yourself a favor and save up another $100 and buy yourself a nice piece--something youll be proud of and pass down to your children.

Yep. Legal to conceal carry without a permit for military, so that will factor into my decision.

First and foremost, I would suggest you get some formal handgun training. Even if you've hunted with a rifle or shotgun, a handgun takes an extra level of safety since it is so much more compact.

So you want something exclusively for home? Or something you can also carry?

I think one of the best full sized budget guns on the market is the Ruger 9E. It is built just like the successful SR9 but costs them less money to make and comes with one magazine.

Another excellent choice is the Kanik CW9. It's a single stack gun (fewer rounds in the magazine) but reasonably priced at around $350 just like that Ruger^.

Pawn shop grade trash you would be better off learning to throw a spear!
The Ruger suggested is a nice choice though.

In my profesional opinion do not buy that trash, go for the Taurus linked above. It's a better built gun by far, unless you plan on doing some drive byes, then defiantly go for the hi point. More street cred that way, just make sure to cant it full tilt.

Have you reviewed the Ruger 9E yet?

And despite the snobs/haters, I love shooting my Hi-Point carbine.
