I have no idea for sure what it is but if form follows function I would make a couple of assertions:

1. it appears that it was built/ designed to be handled frequently. It costs more money to round edges of simple objects so they were probably rounded to make them more comfortable to handle.

2. It appears to have a handle on one side. Is there a handle on the opposing side? If so, I would assume it was designed to be portable and frequently handled.

3. The top appears to be designed to either spin. rotate, or depress. The amount of corrosion makes it difficult to tell.

4. there appears to be missing projections from both the wider center circle and the outer edge.

I suppose land mind would be possible but I wouldn't think they would come with carry handles.

top opening floor safe could be an option

some sort of lab equipment designed to remain stationary or retain heat maybe? kiln? centrifuge?

I was thinking it was an inground marker for land surveying. The protrusion on the side isn't a handle but to keep it from bein pulled up and the center part held a round engraved location marker.

Base for an old gas light pole, maybe. Looks like the post would bolt to the top of it.

I'm amazed no one has an answer here yet. I saw it at lunch and had no idea and still don't. Bring it to antiques roadshow!

no surveyor is carrying around something that big. i've done surveys dating back to the 1800s and it's still small rods to mark corners.

That hole at the top may be where you put the staff from Raiders of the Lost Ark on the Summer Solstice as the sun is setting to find where the Ark is buried.

Let us know. We could use it about now.
