Just saw about 5 or 6 hogs coming to the dove field at Sherburne, and damn it to hell, all I have is 7 1/2s and 8s.

I know someone who killed a deer with no. 7 steel shot. I'm sure it could take down a hog if you pulled off a close enough shot.

Where would be the best place to put a shot on a hog with that small a shot size? Don't they have pretty thick skin?

Full disclosure, I've never killed a hog. Always been a bird hunter, but I'd kill one of those destructive bastards in a heartbeat.

Last year out there, were were woodcock hunting in a tickets. BIgHoss saw 2 get up and where headed my way. I got one shot at 10 yards, it was running in a thicket. It grunted when I shot but i lost them only a few seconds later. I am pretty sure that I hit it, but it lives to see another day.

Wouldn't waste a shot unless they are 15 yards or less. They have thick skin and thick skull. Don't like to wound em even though they are swine

My brother killed a 50lb sow at 35 yards with #4 steel. It can be done, just have to hit them in the head more than likely. I wouldn't think twice about slinging lead at a hog.

Plenty with 4 and 6 during squirrel season.

Shoot em in the gut and let em run off and die......unless you point blank, then head shot if they not too big

I shot a 305 pound sow 3 times from 5 yards away with 00 buckshot and didn't do anything but knock it out. Had to shoot it again point blank to finish it off.

So the moral of the story is, don't do it if it's big enough to whip your arse.

I was dove hunting several years ago in West Texas and had a huge sow chase me off the tree line when I went to pick up a bird. I ran parallel with the tree line and she ran out into the field squealing. She made a circle and went back into the woods. I was thinking all along I hope this bird shot will kill this thing. Never had to try. It was a scary moment. Im lucky she didn't chase me or she would have had me for lunch.

I'm going dove hunting this week. Maybe I'll carry two shells of buckshot in my pocket just in case. I would still shoot one with bird shot if that is all I have on me.

Would be nice if you could carry that on public land, but no bueno. I think I'll carry whatever the largest shot is that you can have during dove season next time.

Ended up seeing another group of hogs, but couldn't get on them. They were right on the side of the road.

Bird shot is devastating on anything at close range

I've killed tons with buckshot. Always aim for ear no matter what weapon you're using.

I've killed several several 100-120 pounders with 3.5 #6s during turkey season. Shoot in the neck
