"Of age" to be in possession of a handgun in LA is 17. But you can't get a CC permit until 21.

Do you have that handy somewhere?

A 17 yo can have a gun in the vehicle?

Rest assured, my sword and spear are not registered and I have no plans to seek permission from anyone to carry my sword and defend myself or my family while traveling. I pose a danger to no one except those who would do harm to me or my family. What part of "...shall not be infringed." do Caesar and his minions not understand?

What part of .... "shall spend the night in the slammer" do you not understand ??

From Opencarry.org:

Opencarry.org LA

It states minimum age to OC is 17, which would imply possession of a handgun.

Oh I understand it very well. That's why this whole issue disturbs me so much. Oh well, this won't be the first time my stubbornness and principles have got me in trouble. That's just the way we outlaw criminals roll.

I admire you for checking the laws, but I travel with mine through any state I want and if I have to use it I will tell the jury that I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

I understand that thought process, but realize it's going to cost you a minimum of about $50K-100K in legal expenses if you end up in court. Depending on the state, you may also end up w/ a felony offense. Having a CCW license will allow you to legally carry your loaded, and easily accessible, weapon in most all the gulf coast states. If you don't have a CCW, I'd recommend geting one. It's worth it for a number of reasons.

What you are saying makes perfect sense and is logical. The problem that I, and others, have with this whole issue is that we feel we should have the right to CC without having to get permission to do so. I wonder if the issue would be different if everyone ignored this regulation and stood on constitutional grounds? There's not enough jails to lock us all up. And by giving ground on the right to CC only if you have a permit, we have empowered the anti-gunners by acquiescing to their argument. Yeah, I know. My principles are probably getting in the way again. It's just how I feel, though.

Constitutional carry is the law in Alaska, Vermont, and Arizona. But unfortunately the rest of us have to get permission. Hopefully the lifetime license law passes so that its a 1-time expense in LA.

This thread deals with car carry though, which isn't necessarily CC. But I do still think its dumb to have to pay to keep a handgun available in your car in Alabama. Just another reason to hate the state...

Some counties use the fee for training facilities/classes ect even though they are not required in AL. I too like the lifetime license as long as it is easily removed with a felony conviction. I would really like a permit to be valid in every state. Gets confusing.

A national CHL was one of the "amendments" of the big background check bill. But obviously it was only to make it look like a gold-covered turd, as it was still ultimately a turd.

I would love national carry as well, as long as they don't try to attach to a shittier bill. It would make traveling much easier, although LA permits are excepted pretty much everywhere in the gulf coast and mid west.

Question for Five0 and FelicianaTigerFan: I traveled through Alabama last year to take my very elderly parents and three of the grandkids to Panama City Beach for a week. IF I had been carrying a handgun stuck down in the console or in the glove box (I don't have a CC permit), would you have taken my handgun, written me a ticket, and hauled my grandfatherly butt to jail? I have a spotless record and no outstanding warrants. I'm just a Papaw out to protect my family...if need be.

Depends on how I found out about it. As with many things, the totality of the situation decides a lot.

re: Alabama handgun transportation law: need verification
Just for the sake of knowing, Virginia's law concerning carrying a handgun in your vehicle is addressed by Virginia's attorney general:

[quote]Accordingly , it is my opinion that, provided the handgun is properly secured in a container or compartment within the vehicle, persons who may lawfully possess a firearm but have not been issued a concealed weapons permit may possess, in a vehicle , a handgun that is loaded and the handgun may remain within reach of a driver or passenger under such conditions. It further is my opinion that, for a handgun to be "secured in a container or compartment, " such storage tool need not be locked. Finally, it is my opinion that an individual may not keep a firearm stored in his vehicle at a place of employment if there is a company policy or signage prohibiting firearms on the premises. With kindest regards, I am Very truly yours, Kenneth T. Cucinelli, II
Attorney General (quote)

Well the bill was watered down a bit, but it passed. I believe that after people are not found dead in the street due to the provisions of this bill future changes will take it even further:

Every single time. Anti-gunners always say this or that bill will turn us back into the "wild West" and make the streets run with blood, but it never happens.

The "Wild-West" is the most overused argument in gun control history and it literally has NEVER happened.
