That's true. OTOH, if the residents of AL recognize problems w/ their own laws, then they should take action. If this board is any indicatioin, the folks in AL already recognize problems w/ these laws. If what you said in an earlier post comes true, maybe these laws will be improved.

It really isn't going to be that big of a change. The original bill proposal would've made the car an extension of the home, but they had to compromise. The new law will read that an unlicensed person can carry a gun in the car but it must be unloaded and out of reach of the driver and passenger (not much change there). The biggest change this law will make is changing AL from a "may issue" state to a "shall issue" state. It will also state that federal gun control laws will not change how AL operates.

Absolutely not. If they feel the need to protect themself from a carjacking, all they have to do is go to the Sherrif office, pay $20 and wait a week. No class, no fingerprint, just a simple background check.
I like the shall issue as well. A Sherrif must have documented reason for denying a permit

Much ado over not very much. Lived here a year and have gone to plenty of ranges without a CCW permit. The LEO's here know the vast majority of people going to these ranges don't have CCW permits either. One told me just keep it out of the "lunge" area and in a range bag or case and you'll be fine.

It's still directly out of reach if it's needed though. That's exactly what's so ridiculous about the law.
In LA, even without a permit, if the driver is of age there can be a handgun sitting on the passenger seat with no problems whatsoever.
Even though it's not hard to get a permit, I shouldn't have to pay 20 dollars to "be allowed" to have a readily accessible handgun for self defense. That's what I see wrong with the law.

I assume "of age" is 21 in Louisiana. I got my ccw permit at 19. Freedom MF'ers!

"Of age" to be in possession of a handgun in LA is 17. But you can't get a CC permit until 21.
So if your parents buy it for you and you travel with it loaded, you're still legal.

Absolutely I could pass a background check...and have, only not for CC purposes, but for bonding and financial issues. I realize I'm in the minority with my beliefs about government lists. Nevertheless, the lists do exist. Caesar, with his self appointed, self anointed czars, attorney general, and homeland security officials have now made criminals out of me and other honest, law abiding, and patriotic citizens. Rest assured, my sword and spear are not registered and I have no plans to seek permission from anyone to carry my sword and defend myself or my family while traveling. I pose a danger to no one except those who would do harm to me or my family. What part of "...shall not be infringed." do Caesar and his minions not understand?

Though I agree with you, you know the govt. has a fee for everything. Did you fuss when you had to pay for a drivers license? It's the same thing. I don't like it any more than you do, but somebody has to pay for the people employed to run the checks and such.

No one over 17 years of age has to pay anything if he or she wishes to keep a loaded handgun readily available in a car in the state of LA. That's the entire point I was making. Your driver's license reference is a red herring.
I do agree people should be paid for doing "checks and such" but I'm merely stating that LA's firearms laws are better.

My statement about the license was to jimjackandjose. He said that Alabama has a law that prevents people from defending themselves. I was merely pointing out that that was not the case. Anyone who can pass a background check can carry worry-free in their vehicle. If they can't pass it, do you really want them carrying in the first place? If the law says you must pass a background check, run 20 miles, and give the Sherrif a handjob, I'd say it was meant to prevent law abiding citizens from exercising their rights. That isn't the case, though.
