I own the compact M&P shield 9mm and the Glock 9mm full size.
Glock all day although the M&P shield does have it's usefulness in terms of concealeability. I just can't shoot it as well.
Have 40 cal Ruger and I don't see the point. 40 cal ammo is just very accessible vs 9mm back in the craze when Obama first got elected. That was the only advantage.

If you get a 40 go with H&K. Either VP40, USP, or P30L. There is basically no recoil in these guns. So you will have similar recoil as a 9mm but the power of a 40 with is greater than a 9mm.

What about this? FN FNS 9mm - comes with two 12 round and one 17 round magazines for $500.. anyone here have any experience with FN? I've never shot one

I was watching some videos on the HK earlier, looked pretty good too.. I want to shoot all of them

I absolutely love my VP9. Got it as a graduation gift last may. Shoots incredibly smooth, feels wonderful in the hand. Also have a 40 shield and love it as well, but would recommend the shield In 9mm bc the recoil Is a tad much in the shield.

Shoot both calibers if possible. Nearly no difference in effectiveness between the two, I like the feel of the .40, especially in a heavier gun.

Just watched about 45 minutes worth of YouTube videos on the FN... I think that's what I'm gonna go with...
It's crazy how much I learned in the past few hours I was supposed to be sleeping a long time ago
Any recommendations in the NOLA area?

Occasionally you can find a Walther PPQ M1 9mm on Gunbuyer.com for $499. No credit card fees and no shipping charges. Great prices but you have to catch them in Stock.

To me it's .45 or 9mm. If you're not wanting a .45, then 9mm is the way to go.

Get the Vp9. You won't be sorry.

FNH FNS should be added to your list

Smart decision. It's a very overlooked and underrated gun and I absolutely love mine. Although the one you posted is a compact and I would recommend a full size...
If for some reason you want to shoot one before you buy, gimme an email and I'd be happy to let you test fire mine. My girlfriend also owns a VP9 so I'd be happy to let you try that one as well. The downside is that I live in BR so you'd have to take a field trip...
The FNS9 I have is probably my favorite bare-bones striker-fired pistol I've got. It just shoots incredibly well.

The glock19 is out of my price range, I see them new for $629.99
As was noted -- (a) get a 9mm and (b) get a G19, an M&P 9/9c or a Shield.
No offense, but you've acknowledged that you knw little about handguns -- so don't overthink this. There's a reason the FBI, the Marine MARSOC command and the Navy SEALS have selected the Glock 19 as their issue weapon.

I like the 9mm and understand why people like more rounds and cheaper ammo, but if advancements in ammo have made the 9mm more effective, wouldn't those same advancements also make the .40 more effective? I mean its not like higher pressure and better expanding rounds can't be used in the .40 too right?

with today's ammo almost no difference in effectiveness.

Glock 19 (9mm)
Springfield XDM (.40)
Choose one... then buy the other later. Done.
Get a .45 caliber later. Preferably in both 1911 and Semi-Auto formats.
