My instructor recommended the following:

- North American Arms .22 magnum - this is what he carries

Why?

- Said that bullet technology has changed.
- High velocity
- Low recall
- Ammunition readily available
- Precision
- Have to be comfortable with gun or you won't carry (assuming he means size?)

Thoughts?

I haven't seen .22 mag in Academy in over a year. Could probably order online though I guess

We just had a North American 22mag thread. He is correct you have to be comfortable in order to carry but at the very very least carry a 380. You want to cause as much tissue damage as possible and 22 mag just doesn't cut it. Try firing a glock 43, or smith and Wesson shield in 9mm and see how you like it and look at some of the holster options out there to carry them. If you must go small look at a ruger lcp for pocket carry on a pocket holster. I carry a glock 19 every day with no problem.

I was just looking at one through the glass years back. I recall not wanting it when the guy behind the counter said "yeah this little booger here will run you a little over $300."

Get you a Smith & Wesson shield 9mm, put that thang in a crossbreed mini tuck holster and call it a day.

As a primary gun .22 mag is stupid. Do not listen. Maybe as an ankle back up gun you could justify carrying it. Stick to common centerfire calibers at least .380 acp or above (I suggest 9mm over .380 and most other calibers).

For the record, I didn't say I agreed with him.

I just thought this would make for an interesting topic to discuss.

And I prefer to keep his name confidential to help keep my identity confidential.

Is that because you are his only student?

Im picking at you, but seriously find a new instructor.

Maybe if you're going out in your skivvies and still need a concealed piece. Otherwise, frick no. I'd rather have that than an old guitar or a broom stick or something in a fight I guess but given the choice between that and a spear I might take the spear. I couldn't hit a barn from the inside with that.

Not at all. Class was packed.

I'm through with it. Received my concealed carry permit approximately 7 to 8 business days after submitting it in person at the LA State Police HQs.

I started a thread last night on a NAA mini revolver 22 mag. I picked mine up today and shot it. I liked it. It's very loud and easily concealed. I feel comfortable without the pocket holster. I think it would be very difficult to pull the hammer back on accident in my pocket. With that said, I will get the holster just to be safe.

According to FBI studies, .22LR kills people just as dead as 9mm and .45 ACP though some here think a bigger bullet will kill someone deader.

It also kills prolapsed 1100 pound cows and 11' alligators handily. It still ain't the right tool for the job for self defense.

No one is going to claim (no pun intended) that the .22 LR cartridge isn't lethal.

What I will claim is that (a) all rimfire cartridges are far less reliable in pistols than centerfire cartridges, and (b) the FBI doesn't issue firearms to their agents chambered in .22 LR.

Edited to correct my losy sppeling

I understand your desire to help him remain anonymous.

There is nothing in the CCW statues or regulations that prohibits an instructor from recommending a .22 pistol for self-defense.

But he is clearly one of "those" instructors. He has every right to teach, and I would never disclose his name to anyone. (But I would gladly pay you $200 cash just to satisfy my curiosity.)

This kind of stuff is why I always recommend to folks that they really do some homework before choosing a CCW instructor.

My classes stay full, so I have this conversation multiple times every week:
"No sir, I don't have any openings. Here are two instructors I can readily recommend (_____ and ______). If their classes are full, please check very carefully the credentials//references of anyone else you might be considering, because there are quite a few people who (IMO) have no business teaching these classes."

I have never claimed to be the greatest CCW instructor in the state (or even in my zip code, for that matter). But every student, in every class I teach, gets a 100% money-back guarantee that says if they are dissatisfied for any reason, they pay me zero. So far (fingers crossed), out of over 1000 students, no one has ever requested a refund -- not even the three people who have managed to flunk the shooting test.

True. But still not close to a 9mm.

Just absolutely false.

It wouldn't be my first choice by far, but it would be okay if the cartridge came in a different handgun configuration. I've never looked at a NAA and thought it looked simple or precise.
