Thinking about trading my old half ton for a 3/4 ton. Buying used its hard to be picky and you kinda take the good deals you find so here's my question.

In that year range, what to stay away from? I know the dodges had a few years of serious transmission issues and the fords had their motor issues. I see fords with the bulletproofing and all that but really don't know what it means.

Fwiw, I'm not excluding a gas guzzler in my options.

Eta: wanna keep the price range under 15k

Same boat. Chevy/gmc is the best option for this range.

Eta. 15k is going to be tough for anything without a lot of miles.

Yep, if you can find a 2005 - 2007(?) 2500 Duramax you'd be golden. Made a lot of improvements to the Duramax but before they loaded the DPF crap.

An 09 dodge would have a 6.7 with no trouble(rip off tbe emmissions crap) and you won't have any Trans issues.

Dodge hate....geaux.

I don't hate dodge, I hate the company that backs them. Never again.

I think you're talking about the LBZ which was only put in the 2006 and 2007 HD.

All of the trucks made for the 2005 year middle had the LLY which is close but doesn't have the improvements like you were talking about.

I wouldnt get a 2005-2010 Ford PowerTurd. That was the expensive to keep running 6.0 and the even more expensive to keep running and worse on fuel 6.4

Duramax seems to be the way to go before all the EPA crap was added.Unless you NEED a diesel and have some deep pockets I wouldnt do it.I did a few years back and dont plan on owning another.

IMO duramax is your best option in that year/price range.

Do not buy a ford diesel unless it has a 7.3 or 6.7

Or a nice Chevy/GMC 2500 with the 6.0 gas.

Well yea...

The 8.1 would be even better if you could find one.

Strictly taking diesel though, duramax is your best option. Let the cummins and ford people piss back and forth at each other about who has the best while yours quietly has no problems for 150k+ miles.

Bought an 07 dodge 4x4 with the 5.9 this week. 5.9s are rock solid and get decent mileage. 6.0 fords are crap if they arent bulletproofed. I just sold a 2004 dodge 2wd with 250k and loved it. Transmission guy told me most if them go out at 160k to 220k. On my old one, I got it rebuilt at 220k for $1900.

The 5.9 was great, but it's time to let go and accept the new age of suck for diesel engines.

I forsee a DOT crackdown on deleted trucks. The 5.9's and 7.3's and LLY's of the world are getting old and high in miles and will soon be gone. Time to embrace SCR and urea fill spouts.

Tired of looking for someone to haul a tractor, cows to the sale barn, and about to add two head of horses to the load to be hauled

Duramax, any year in that range, is the best option.
