Stolen from the OT.

quote:

The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, Louisiana's largest-ever project to rebuild coastal land, was approved on Wednesday to receive $2.26 billion to move forward with construction, with work expected to begin on the unprecedented plans later this year. The decision was issued by the federal-state panel that oversees BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill restoration efforts in Louisiana. The money will come from settlement proceeds related to the 2010 spill.

Yeah that’s what it’s supposed to do. The reality is that it’s gonna pump money to a bunch of politicians buddies!!!

Agreed!
I hope I'm wrong, but I predict we'll look back and see this as a massive failure in a few decades.

The funds include $378 million for mitigation of the diversion's expected damage to existing oyster beds as well as to finfish, shrimp and crab fisheries

It will also be used to help residents and businesses likely to experience higher water levels when the diversion is operated.

It's not going to just be politicians getting paid.

If I buy an old shrimp boat and throw it in Myrtle Grove can I get paid?

Massive failure incoming. River only carries 10% of the
sediment that built the delta.

I read an article saying the diversion will consist of 98% water and 2% sediment.

You sure that isn't the freshwater diversion that was built?

JimBeam is pretty familiar with this project and ircc the sediment load was supposed to be pretty substantial.

All for using the Mississippi silt to build up coastal wetlands but there needs to be more outlets than what seems to be proposed. Velocity is high in a canal discharge when there are few outlets. Velocity sends sediment out always before it sinks just like the Midnight Lumps. More outlets slow the velocity and allow the sediment to sink faster.

Assuming the democrats don’t transfer the money to a ninth ward welfare program or worse.

It is working, but its no where near the scale that this one is going to be. Davis pond is 5000 cubic ft/s, barataria will be 75000 cubic ft/s.

I’m not saying it won’t help, this is west bay diversion opened in 2007-08. It’s made some land but it’s not like it’s coastal changing amount and if you was to go look at what was lost at the end of pass a loutre tbere is no comparison that we are going backwards in just that one area.
And anyone who thinks their will not be some serious graft and fraud at each level of the project has never been around louisiana and plaquemines parish and west Jefferson parish politics.

The behind the diversion was 4-6+ft deep prior to the diversion. Used to hunt and run my boat through that area prior to the diversion. My uncle was involved in the diversion and they found they had to slow the current down with some small berms to help with land building.

But agreed, diversions take an extremely long time to build land and it’s not going to be overwhelming like it happened in the past.
